    Question Alternator.... Anybody from Colchester

My alternator has potentially gone. Friday evening the battery light and car with spanner came on about 5 minutes later lights went pas abs everything went then eventually it stalled... Jumped it atleast 4 times and moved about a mile the battery wouldn't hold anything. Had the dump the car and the morning after cycle back to it with a new battery on my back 😄 . New battery fitted and it started up straight away. The battery light and car spanner light are on. I stopped at 2 GarageBand they ran the volt meter accross the battery 11.49 while running and revving up so the alternator isn't charging the battery. All they could say is well it probably the alternator but not for sure. I've checked fuses, abs plug and disconnected and reconnected everything 😄 still no luck... I've found a garage that will charge£240 to put in a new one and belt. Is it possible to plug the car in to a code read and it will say yes it's your alternator or no your stupid just need to clean out a connection😄. If so is anyone in colchester that could pop over and read it.

If your getting 11.49v while the car is running the alternator isn't working, why do they want to change the aux belt for ? Is it damaged/deteriorated ?

Just changed my brother's alternator on his 150 cdti. Fairly easy todo, alternator was £124 quid. All sorted.

It's me wanting it changed, figured if there going to take it off, might as well put a new one on?

I know the alternators not charging the battery I just want to confirm its defiantly the alternator that's broken or there's a connection gone wrong before I spend the money on it. No one has actually looked at the alt if you know what I mean.

I'm thinking this because when I drove it yesterday both lights would go off and then come on again about 20 seconds later, it did this 2/3 times with in about 15 minutes of driving. which is why I think maybe its a connection.

I did fit a set of HID's 3 days previous to this happening now that I think about it could I have inadvertently destroyed my alternator some how?

I did look at doing it but to get to mine you have to mess with the engine mounts and move the engine over and that's a bit above my skills

No you don't check out my howto for the Z20NET engine, the Z22SE is exactly the same mounting. I've changed alternators on both easily without touching the engine mounts.

Thanks Ian just had a look at yours. The one I tried to follow, I got as far as the air box out and then it said about placing a trolley jack under the sump to support the engine because you will have to slightly slide the engine and remove it from the left side. I might go and give it a go... will be back soon

I've gone to look at it and noticed this which I didn't yesterday. It's the plug into the alt. There's only 1 wire going in, should there be 2? I've unplugged it and there's obviously 1 cable connection thing on the left, it looks like there should be 2??
