I would question how accurate the on board computers are. I think relying on that alone could have you easily 5mpg wrong either way. 1.8 vvt mapped, around town 32mpg , motorway 44mpg - fast driving around town in winter 28mpg

Ive done numerous manual fuel tests on my car over the years. The on board comp is very accurate on my car. Filled my car up to the brim before xmas and zerod my comp. I waited till my light was flashing and comp said i had used 12.5 gallons. I brimmed car again and when converted from litres to gallons i had put in 12.4 gallons.
Also the average mpg was within 1 mpg to a manual calaculation compared to the obc.
Perhaps they are not all accurate, but i know mine is.
My BC is within 2 mpg everytime i fill - sometimes spot on but never more than 2 mpg out. I drive a cdti 150 Auto but on the motorway 50mpg + depending on how flat the journey is - have had 57 mpg on one 200 mile round trip.
mine runs great at 30mph in 4th so maybe as said,.. some maintenance required. 70 uphill in 6th will be fine but more fuel economical in 5th
My computer seems to be pretty accurate from previous testing against what fuel put in etc.
I did a journey yesterday about 50 miles on the motorway and it was happy in 6th on the flat/down hill, but as soon as i get an incline i need 5th gear to be more economical and for the car to feel like it isnt struggling. Though if im in 6th and doing around 75 - 80mph it does more MPG and feels a lot more comfortable if i get a bit of an incline on the motorway.
My EGR is blanked, Oil changed, Air filter, fuel filter all done. Some people can call me mad, but i also use BP Ultimate only. I wont use any other fuel station. On the occasions i have, ive noticed the car has changed, so i always try to stick to the BP and always the ultimate.
Funny you should mention the EGR, it failed on me a couple of weeks ago, engine wouldn't rev and would gradually creep up to 2000 rpm then clear and be fine. A quick code read later presented me with a duff EGR valve which I replaced last Saturday and it now seems a lot more willing! Maybe it's been dodgy for some time, but at 126,000 miles it has lasted fairly well.
