    Default Jobs ?

    Recently I've been actively looking to change my career, I'm a fully trained vehicle technician and have been at main dealers all my working life up until 2008, currently I'm a mechanic/vehicle technician at an independent specialist (covering parts and service aswell) I've been here for over 4 years now, but I'm looking to the future and in 5-10 years I don't want to be working on my knees in a freezing cold workshop, I'm also getting to the point where I'm loosing interest in working on cars after nearly 15 years on the tools.

    So basically I'm asking what jobs you guys do that keep you interested and if any of you have been in the same sort of position, what you did about it ?

    I used to be a fitter... now build hospitals in 3D

    Still using my engineering skills, but from a completely different point of view, with lots of site visits all over to keep me from going insane.

    I was a contractor designing prisons and immigration centres for modular builders, finally took a staff position with one to set a career going and they went bust 2 months later!.. this led to me going self employed in 2003 offering design and planning / building control services to the modular industry and building industry. Been going ever since and nice and busy!!

    cosy office with lots of pubs chippies and cafes nearby!

    I was a machine operator/fitter for 15 years until 2001 when the factory I worked for shut down, I decided to start a new career and did an access course at college the to university where I studied Applied computing and got a degree which allowed me to do a PGCE (post graduate certificate in education) and got a job teaching ICT at a secondary school until I was made redundant again at the end of 2011. Now I am caring for my poorly mrs and occasionally doing supply (which pays very well).
    I have not made up my mind whether to get back into teaching or start a new career yet again.

    I had a chap do some tiling last year, he was very cheap, very clean, very efficient and did a fabulous job in a short time. Chatting to him (he was about 60) - turns out he has only been tiling for 8 years, prior he was an IT network engineer for large mainframes, ... as these have become more and more redundant, he took up tiling! - glad he did!!!

    I'm possibly the other end of the scale here but this is a post I made on another forum recently;

    Over Christmas, I did a lot of soul searching and decided that my unhappiness in my job is perhaps deeper than just this particular job but in actual fact it's more to do with my career as a graphic designer (or more specifically my limited of ability as a graphic designer preventing me from progressing). I decided that it's time to accept, that as a Graphic Designer, I have reached my limit and if I want to be happy I need to move onto something that better suits me.

    This got me thinking about what I enjoy doing and what skills I already have that I could utilise. After a few days dreaming about running pubs and being an F1 driver I started thinking more about my ability to pick up technical information quite quickly and how much I enjoy the challenge of problem solving and looking for patterns etc.. (do I sound a bit rain man? lol). And it dawned on me that the happiest I've been wasn't when I was designing but when I was turning those designs into a real thing (I should perhaps point out that my qualifications are in multimedia design and not strict graphic design) and working out how to make this design come to life. The geeky boring bits like writing action script or trying to work out why a line of text wasn't styling the way it should, were the bits I was happiest doing and seemed to be quite good at.

    It quickly dawned on me that despite this nostalgia, Director's dead and Flash is on it's last legs, meaning there's no career prospects there, so I'd need to look at another avenue to pursue that will allow my inner nerd to flourish. That got me thinking about more recent work, and how much I've enjoyed those same challenges when learning code and trying to make things like websites and mail shots work and understanding why things behave the way they do.

    Based on that I'm pretty sure that what I really want to do is code. The problem is how do I get from here as Dave with a degree in multimedia from 10 years ago to confidently applying for jobs as a web developer? Have I left it too late to learn? Is it possible that an employer would take on an almost 30 year old trainee? How disciplined would I need to be to teach myself? Do employers seriously consider someone who's self taught? Would another degree be better (if so can someone lend me the money. lol).

    so... You're not alone but you need to think what it is you want.

    If you want a fairly easy but boring at times job be nightwatchman. Am in a worm cabin with a tv but have to stroll around site every so often.
