Default NOT the head gasket... i dont think.

So i went for a sniff test today. Test negative. He also did a pressure test. Inconclusive as he said the pressure wasn't really dropping even at higher than average pressure. He jacked it up on the ramps for me and dropped the centre part of the under tray. There was coolant on the tray seam and some hanging from a few pipes right at the bottom of the engine on the cam belt side. We inspected the engine for signs of coolant leaking but couldn't see any with the restricted view we had. We also consulted his database for location of the water-pump but couldn't find it. What's the probability that the water pump is leaking but didn't show up on the pressure test?

Is it a big job to change the water pump and is it worth doing the cam belt while there's work being done in that side of the engine. I'm on 87k at the moment.

Could be a seal in in the pump bud. I'd be tempted to pull it out anyway and do the cambelt while I was at it.

Sounds like the seal on the water pump bud but I'd check all the hoses around that area
But if it is the water pump do the cam belt as well

Water pump is driven internally by gears.

But since belt has to be removed to strip then may aswel get it changed no extra labour then.

how long was it left pressurised?

personnally I wouldn't want to pay 6 hours labour on a maybe. Just my opioin tho.

Get them to remove full under tray and look.

personnally as mentioned in another thread if its an external leak my money would be on egr cooler

I would go for the oilcooler/thermostat housing. Mine have an leak issue to, in the same area as yours. I cant direct locate the leak, but when I look on the coolant diagram then I suspect it to be in that area. My leak is'nt so big yet and its not allways a problem. The problem is, when I have to do the repair, then the climate pump has to be removed to get clearens to the oilcooler/themostat housing.

Is it not pressuring and blowing the coolant out of header ? , mine tested negative with sniff test but was head gasket after all . Try putting sum folded up kitchen papertowel at bk of the header wedge it in , if it gets wet then thats your source of coolant loss !

    Thats what i did

Changing the water pump can quickly become expensive. Upon inspection 5 oil seals were found to be leaky 1 of which was the crankshaft. 250€ for those + 190€ for water pump + 300€ cambelt kit, 210€ labour (replaced some other minor things). I could have got the parts cheaper but I needed the car back asap.

Posted in the other thread before reading this. Total cost for my waterpump change was £700 (under warranty) although upon inspecting it I would of said just the seal was the problem, however with all the labour time to get to it Im glad it was changed. It will be coming from the drain hole near aux belt.
