    Default Intermittent heavy steering?!

    Hi all

Unless I'm going mad my steering is getting heavy intermittently. It was fine today and then this evening definitely seemed to be heavier.

When it does it it seems fairly consistently heavier, maybe slightly more so around the 12 o'clock position.

I've checked the level, no leaks etc, no weird noises on lock etc. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?

    Thanks

Hi, thanks. Yeah I noticed it tonight actually, got the usual headlight flicker when turning onto my drive! I'm sure it's heavier though, very weird

Check belt. Where alternator is at. Maybe new steering pump needed.

Do you have traction control? Does the dash light illuminate occasionally when it does go heavy?

If so i would be looking at your CIM. Pain to replace (cheaper if you have a Tech2 and the know-how). Hopefully it doesn't come to this though!

Check the usual suspects like tyre pressure, etc.

The power steering is electric and is susceptible to any drop in voltage caused by things such as slipping alternator belt etc. I had a weird fault on mine which turned out to be a wire i had connected to the feed side of the fuse that supplies the hydraulic pump that I had run to my towbar, the slight drop in voltage caused by the caravan fridge was messing up the pump while towing. Check all the connections and make sure your battery is in good nick before suspecting anything more sinister

Sorry to hijack but same thing happened to me yeterday, Parked up the car but then had to pop down to the shops and when I tried to pull off it was like I had no power
steering at all. Turned off the car and back on it was alright again.

I've had a few weird ones like this over the years, no computer display, no cruise control, engine str8 into limp mode. Switching off and on again always cures it, after all it is computer controlled. Do you have the means to check the battery voltage?
