Something like this should do you. they make some high grade meters but they also do this cheaper range. I have one that i use regularly at work and it never fails me and always has the features i require

In my view, you can't beat buying the best tools for the best you can afford while at the same time trying to sort out the cheap and nasty, last 5 minute stuff, from the professionally built, lasts a lifetime stuff.

Using meters to measure and test electrics and electronics is a bit tougher to whittle down. I mean if all you are going to do is measure the voltage on a car battery, an alternator or a mains plug, you can buy much cheaper, but if you want a more versatile instrument then Wilkos recommendation is about the average minimum spend and should last you for ever if looked after.

Unless you are doing in depth electrical fault finding on a regular basis when close coupling sensors and probes are useful (but you can think in terms of almost 5-10 times this price for starters), then this is probably a similar item to one I have in my own tool box.

If you only need it for basic testing then http://mobile.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=37279 will be more than sufficient it will have basic AC/dc and ohm's so it's all you'll need

Even though I will prob only use it for the basics, it would be nice to have one that can do a little more, incase I decide to take it a little further . You never know what problems might arise.
