    is this easy to remove does anyone know, ideally without dismantling most of the interior to do so?

    It just clips in - no interior dismantling of any kind needed.

    Unclip it from the passenger side first. I cheated and used the back end of a butter knife and slid it under the cup holder to help release it.

    Slide the knife under the passenger side of the cup holder to help release the clips on that side - don't use the knife to lever the whole thing out.
