    Default Vectra, a problem car?

    Guys,

I have been looking around the tinterweb as I am planning to change my car (I may, I may not as it is running perfectly!,, touches large chunk of wood )

I had a read over the current Mondeo on forums and it has the same if not more issues than any Vectra and will all the very same things, EGR, DMF Injectors and economy1 looks like the diesels are quite thirsty things with 40mpg being an average where I am on just over 50mpg average!

Perhaps we overlook the good in the cars too often when all we read are problem post after problem post?

You look on forums for any car, and I mean any car and you will find a list of problems for them all. The Vectra is no better or worse I would say than 95% of the equivalent crop of diesels. Its all personal taste at the end of the day, with any car get one you like the look of and that drives well (and get a warranty) and then happy days, regardless of what it is.

True what you say Derek, all we read about is mostly problems, so we become paranoid and start checking on issues we don't even have, well I do anyway. End of the day what's important is you like the car like Dan said.

Having been a previous mondeo owner (several models/engines) the difference between those and the veccy are night and day... The veccys have never dumped me anywhere, even in limp mode and I do get slightly better mpg than I did in the mondy.

When I first got mine, first Vec (though many Vx's) and first ever diesel, being a big engine petrolhead, I joined the Forum and got the crap frightened out of me on the 150 derv reading all the problem threads.
It's been the best car I've ever had, never let me down and I'm very happy with it/her. Most people come on these forums for advice with problems, very few post up praising good points, just the way it is.

The DMF well I laugh at that one, my old one went on for 120k with a knackered DMF and no gearbox issues in that time. Unlike the Mondeos which seem to drop them. I don't think the problems with the old mondeos (particularly the 2.2TDCi unit) plague the new one. I think though I'm not 100% they use throttle dampening do no DMF and don't use the Delphi injectors either. I have to say though the Vec is one underestimated car and as Dan Black Sri put it on average it's no better nor worse than any other car out there.

its not any worse than any other car , ALL forums are the same .
People join forums primarily because they are searching for a prob with their car , this is why its full of probs rather than good points

Better the devil you know. I can't say I have had any serious problems in 5 years of ownership. OK so it is a signum, but I don't think that makes any difference.

I have had Vauxhalls all my life, and not counting the Viva HB they have all been ultra reliable. I had a 2.0 petrol cavalier and did 160K in it, the only problem i ever had was a rotor arm failure and that was cos I fitted the wrong one! I am currently running about in a 2002 2.2 DTi Veccy in which I have done 240K miles, all I have had to replace are tyres and a wiper linkage, which is obviously not going to leave you stranded. It is still on the original Clutch, battery and exhaust, and has never missed a beat. I would have thought that a lot of guys who use this forum work on their cars themselves (although we seem to be a decreasing band?), and for those of us that do the spare parts and consumables are as cheap as you can get. I recently put a new concentric slave cylinder in my wife's Corsa, it cost me £25. God knows what one for a jap or heaven forbid German car would cost?? For me I just can't see how you can fault them?? Oh and Vauxhall are top of the pile for safety innovation as well (no I don't work for them).

Thing with forums is that the problems WILL be highlighted and talked about frequently, all cars have their problems but unless you're part of a forum/club you're probably less likely to hear about the collective and most common problems, it's how we ultimately over come them by discussing and writing How to's etc.
