Default 2.0 DTi - Starting problems.

    Right here goes,

I've got a 2004 Vauxhall Vectra DTi Design. In the mornings, I go to start it and the glow plug light is on, then I turn key to start and it keeps cranking. I put my foot flat to the floor and it finally starts. All in all, takes around 5 seconds.

Next, when I'm out, my car is at optimum temperature and I park it up to go somewhere. I return around hours later and turn the key. Glowplug light not coming on, car cranking, foot to the ground, takes around 10 seconds and finally start.

Can anyone shed any light here?

When freezing, glow plugs seem to work as they should. I have a hunch myself on what it might be, but I'd like the thoughts of y'all to see if you think the same.

try giving it an extra heat in the morning & see if that helps , does the car / spanner light come on when starting from cold & remain on for a minute or two after starting ?

Nah, the service light and the light bulb only. MAnaged to get rid of the service light by pressing the brake and odometer reset simultaneously, whilst in ignition. The bulb is for my front drivers side foglight which I removed and forgot to put back in.

so the glow plugs should be ok then , might be worth speaking to the dealer about field remedy 1579 although this shouldn't be the problem on a 2004 car but is worth looking into .
another thing you could try first is to unplug the coolant temperature sensor & start the car from cold ( glow light will stop on for a good while ) if it starts ok then this will eliminate injector seals & leak off pipes .
you will need to plug the sensor straight back in as soon as the car starts .

    Thanks,

    I'll check it out.

My opinion is the leak off pipes, down to the fact that it starts as it should when facing downhill.

My engine cover is off atm so I'll try and see the condition of them tomorrow.

Lol yeah, another thing I've noticed, comparing mine with a friends, mine idles louder. Whether it's simply a matter of getting it serviced I don't know. Most likely it is, but it's considerably louder! Idles the same on the dashboard but just louder.

some generally are , we had a 2004 dti club in at work recently & that seems to idle quieter than mine , although mine has done nearly 3 times the mileage so it is kind of expected
