My CDTI 120 revs in to the red line???

Evening all. I may be asking a stupid question but here it goes. I have a vectra C 1.9 cdti 120. and its not sluggish by any means. My concern is that on previous disels I have driven they rev up to 4800 rpm and stop reving any higher than that. However, on this car it will happily rev in to the red line and still pull all the way up there. Is there a fault by not stopping the revs at 4800 rpm?
No fault lights are on nor is there any stored fault codes logged or present. It runs & drives perfect with an average 44mpg around town. My worry is as the MOT is up in Feb will it fail on a smoke test due to the revs not stopping at 4800? and is there a fault I can fix if at all there is a fault???

The warning marks on the clock start at 5000 but the ecu limits rpm to 5200 as standard. Mine runs happily to 5500.

Interesting. I dont thrash it. But was worried when it reved in to the red line which started me thinking. Dont think my one stops at 5500 either though. Do you know of others with same rev range? may be I am looking to deep in to things. take it yours has passed its MOT

Mine revs to 5500 because it is remapped to do so, they should not exceed 5200 otherwise and few mappers are able to increase the red line.

Yep sounds like it has been remapped. Or your tachometer is faulty and is over-reading. Best way is to measure with an obd scan tool or opcom and see if the RPM readings are the same.

I've never really understood why people raise the rev limit on diesels during 'tuning'. Unless there are serious hardware mods, the engine is never going to produce any useful power at such high revs. All it does is knacker the turbocharger and perhaps a few other bits. If you want rapid accelleration then you should have changed up long before 5000rpm.

Standard is 5200 according to the hand book I got and the obd2 readings and the map.

As for you lack of knowledge on diesels, I can produce over 230bhp at 5200rpm on this engine, what do you concider useable?

Thanks guys will have a look at revs on obd today. Just as a point, I dont drive like a looney at all to many road humps and traffic lights put pay to that years ago. I drive the car quite normally and change gear around 2-2500 rpm but every so often rev it hard to get rid of soot build up hence the discovery the revs were not limited. Thanks for your suggestions all............
