Default are cim units coded to the car?

i have a cim unit for sale, but i dont have the car pass, so assumed it was pretty useless. i have had someone message me asking if i have one with a specific ident code on. does this mean it would work for him if it was that code, or is it still useless. dont want to sell him an expensive paper weight lol
