Right I know there are lots of threads about this but don't seem to be getting anywhere, from what I understand it could be many things, main culprits being arb bushes, drop link, top mounts.drop links were done about 4 months ago but were an aftermarket part (think it was euro car parts) top mounts and bearings were done in June when I had coilovers fitted. Only thing that hasn't been done is the arb bushes, I'm looking to do them this weekend, if that doesn't solve it what else could I try? Shocks and springs are new and was only fitted on the weekend. The noise appears when going along rough roads (most roads round my way) sometimes over speed bumps and I noticed tonight that it does it when driving along at a slow speed (15mph roughly) and rocking the steering slightly. Arb bushes? I can feel it through the pedals and flooring when the noise appears, it happened before Christmas but went away and now doing it again :s

    Its a 1.9cdti 120 57 reg with 80,000 miles on the clock

sounds exactly the same as mine. can feel it through the pedals and its like a clunking noise? I replaced the droplinks and anti-rollbar bushes on the front (saab links and powerflex bushes) and that hasn't fixed it. Haven't checked the top mounts (not really sure how too) and i haven't checked the springs (cant see anything broken at the bottom of the spring and there's no sagging on the one side, but once again i dont really know what im doing?).

My best guess at the moment is either exhaust mounts (although quick inspection these looked fine), or something to do with the wheel hub (since my ABS sensor seems broken on the same corner too). Not sure if its worth checking for these on your car for the sake of "process of elimination". If it's not those then i'm gonna have to take it too a garage and get someone who knows how to hold a spanner to take a look for me. Be interesting to see if you solve your own problem though (please post what it was if you find it).

Another thing to check is the track rods, the ball joint next to the rack can give a knock like this too when worn

    Expensive/hard to change?
And dj lee I shall check the exhaust when I put it on stands for the arb bushes, going to just give everything a few tugs to see if there are any loose bits.

Do you find your car's steering feels twitchy/unstable and wanders really badly?

The reason I ask is that I had exactly what your describing, when I rocked the steering wheel left and right it knocked and I could feel it through the floor, in my case it turned out to be the steering rack itself that was worn.

Fitted a second hand rack about a month ago and it's sorted it, the steering is also much firmer.

No if I let go of the steering it drives straight with no problems at all, doesn't wander just sits straight, so don't think it will be that but I could be wrong, going to try the arb bushes and then uprated drop links and go from there, hopefully it's nothing too expensive"/

Think I've diagnosed it!!! At last!! After buying new drop links, arb bushes and wheel bearing I think I've diagnosed it without putting any of them on drive shaft inner cv joint!! On passenger side, makes the exact clunk/rattle noise I get inside the car, outter cv joint is fine and no play in drivers side inner or outter so has to be that....right?!

Sounds promising, given my complete lack of mechanical knowledge, could you possibly explain what to look for and how to check this... If i can at least have a good idea that this is also my problem, i'll take it too a garage and get them to re-check and replace. Be nice to get one of the two main issues sorted on my motor!

Grab the inner cv gator and pull it towards the wheel and back towards the gearbox, shouldnt make a noise (my drivers side moves about 1mm and doesn't make a sound, passenger side moves about 4mm and clunks like a goodun)
