Rough engine start 1.9 CTDi

Hi all,

Recently got a 1.9CDTi which starts rough on the first start up of the day. After that, if starts fine.

On the first start-up it fires up after a couple of seconds, then once started, it is very shakey and the engine sounds like its not running on all cylinders. After 10-15 seconds, it runs as it should.

After doing my research it looks like it could be the leak off pipes?
If so, are the pipes easy enough to replace? Tried looking for a how 2 on here but I can't find one.

Does anyone else have any ideas what it could be?

Cars just had a full service, so I would of thought that would of been checked? On start-up the glow plug light comes on then turns off after a couple of seconds.

Any warning light (for glowplugs) that stay on after start up? Usually they do if detecting 1 or more faulty plug.

If it's the 150 engine they are easy enough to do and £40 should get you a decent set. If the engine is on high miles you will most likely need them changing anyway, if not been done recently.


Check first all connections and that goes for injector connections also, they can fail.

sounds like you got same problem i did, mine turned out to be starter motor, mine took around 15 seconds to start till it fired up , and rest of day was fine like any other car starting up , do you get any white/black smoke?

If you have one or even two glowplugs out of action at start up it will effectively only be running on two or three cylinders for a few seconds when starting from cold

Thanks for all your replies. Engine only takes a couple of seconds to start. Then after that it shudders for 10 seconds or so then ticks over as normal. Baines - I do get white smoke on a cold morning ( quite a lot sometimes) which goes once the engine has settled.
This problem doesn't seem to be as bad when we have drove the car late the previous night I.e. less time sat turned off.

Oh and no glow plugs warning.

This is exactly the same issue I'm seeing on my 1.9 cdti Siggy I purchased before Xmas, thought it could also be down to a weak battery as I left a interior light on overnight by accident and was greeted by a flat battery on Xmas day Taking it back to the garage Friday to take a look at another issue so i'll get them to check the glow plugs while I'm there, sounds rough first thing then fine starting later in the day, not really had a cold spell since I purchased to fully test it in the morning
