Default Replaced alternator now won't start!

The alternator on my 1.8 petrol vecta died the other day (the battery light came on while driving and the power steering kept cutting in and out & displays/lights going off etc. - checked the voltage across the battery while engine running and it dropped to 11.8v rather than rise to the usual 14-14.5v). I replaced the alternator today, all went well, but I've gone to start the car and it won't fire. It's cranking ok (I did try jump starting just to rule out the battery) but it doesn't try to fire at all which makes me think an ignition problem maybe? I've checked all relevant fuses/relays and I can't see any cables I've accidentally unplugged. I'd be grateful for any ideas on this one...

    All cables fitted correctly?

double check you have not knocked any sensors/ wires in process.

    check ALL fuses.

any lights displayed? Do you have spare key?

Everything seems in place under the bonnet. All fuses are ok. The usual lights are displayed on the dash when the key is turned, battery, oil, abs ecu etc. I've tried the spare key also, makes no difference - are you thinking down the immobiliser route?

I did think possible immob due to batt being disconnected.

can you do pedal trick. Or read codes see if you have any?

    is it turning fast enough?

what's the pedal trick, can't say I've heard of that? I assume the only way to read the codes is with a code reader? It looks and sounds like it is but I can't say I know how fast it should turn over tbh.

ok I've got five error codes:
    1. speed control command switch out of range high
    2. system voltage malfunction
    3. generator lamp `L` control circuit malfunction
    4. vehicle speed sensor range/performance
    5. vehicle speed sensor malfunction

The third one sounds odd, do you know what it's referring to? Am I right in thinking these errors are now cleared because there is no spanner showing on the display or have I got that wrong?

Re no 3 -Did you fit a genuine GM alternator - I fitted an aftermarket one to my 2004 1.9 (120) and I still get this code even after clearing it - never had a problem or warning lights so shouldn't worry to much about that

No2 Have you checked the output from the battery

Looks like 1,4 and 5 are all related but could be old codes that need deleting - could do with a diagnosis check clear all faults and then check again

I don't know with the vectras but I remember a few years back when I changed batteries on rovers you used to have to lock, unlock via the fob ( 10 times = guessing ) to get it working the immobilzer again.
    Worth a try?

Yeah it's a GM Bosch alternator (used). I would have thought the second and third ones were caused by the old alternator failing and either way shouldn't prevent the car from starting (the car did start ok before I changed faulty alternator). The other three may explain why the cruise control is very temperamental but my only concern at the mo is why the thing won't start.
