Default Faulty LCD in speedo clocks

Hey all, I have a problem with one of the small lcd screens in the car's speedo. It's not the mileage lcd but the other one that shows if doors are open, faults etc. The lcd is badly pixelated and barely readable and just spoils the look of the car. So I bought a set of second hand clocks and thought I could just de-solder the ribbon running to the board and put it on my own board but looking at it, it just looks like it will burn up on contact with any type of soldering iron. Is there anyway I could cut and join the new lcd? I thought about just putting the second hand clocks into the car but my mileage is 96,000 and the second hand clocks are 158,000 and too much of a difference, plus the fact that I have already change the whole speedo to blue leds. Is there a way to even correct the mileage to the same as mine using op or tech and I guess I could live with having to re-solder a new set of blue lcds or can I de-solder a chip that stores my mileage and solder it onto the other clocks? It's a real pain for something so small but the OCD in me is winning the battle. Just hope someone has a simple fix but nothing is ever easy. Just to clarify my car is a 2002 Vec C 2.2 Dti.

Any advise would be top notch

No way of transferring it without specialist equipment, the ribbons are made from conductive plastic there's no metal in them at all to solder. There are places that can do it for you with specialist hot air equipment, but it's not possible by the home user.

yeah i think its a bit more long winded but the safer option just to change the clocks over and change the smd's etc, the millage can be altered to what yours is now, just need someone to do it.

Yeah mate, was thinking along those lines myself, worst of all the lcd just looks as though there is damp or something behind the glass. I might take out the speedo and leave it on top of a lukewarm radiator overnight to see if the smudge disappears. I can always keep the other clocks for spares and just live with the smudged lcd in the one I'm using or maybe experiment on dismantling the spare clocks lcd and if confident enough have a bash on the clocks I'm using. Probably balls up both clocks and end up ordering another set of clocks...lol

Suppose if I had loads of spare money I could just get brand new clocks with no miles and program them myself

    This is what mine did...

I put up with it for a while, then tried to fix it, ended up stuffing it completely and buying brand new clocks from Vauxhall to replace them.

This is my one here. Gonna take it out now and try a bit of heat and see if it helps. My brother in law has the same car and his lcd was the same and when he went out to the car one morning it was gone, seemed to have corrected itself. So the only thing I can think of that cured it was heat.

Well tried all sorts and it didn't work, was worth a go anyway. It wasn't a complete waste of time though as I got to put in the red led for my high beam as all the other blue leds were putting me off when driving with the highs on and not noticing I still had them on with oncoming traffic. Problem solved

Thought I'd just stick up a photo with the dash at night
