Default 3.0v6 diesel a good engine?

I am in the process of looking to change my car and if I'm honest my head is mince with it!

I cannot find a modern car I really like, so I've started to look at vectra/signums again. I started off looking at VXR's but I do 15-20k per year now shuttling kids about the country, so realistically the running costs would cripple me as we live in rural Scotland. I have spotted a nice 3.0 diesel signum with low mileage but I've been searching on here this am and all I have read is problem threads with this engine, surely it cannot be that bad?
The one I fancy is a 57 plate design with 47k on the clock, with a FSH.. I know the economy isn't too good with them around 40mpg combined but its still a fair bit better than my current 2.0 turbo. I really need a bigger car due to getting a Labrador in the new year, plus having 2 kids and all the associated gubbings, so more space is needed and the signums are still a great looking car IMHO!

So is the 3.0 diesel worth looking at or avoid like the plague?

    Thanks guys..

Absolutely spot on engine. I love mine just Shame about the mpg. I'm currently only getting 29/30 mpg that's roughly 50/50 driving but then again I don't drive slow.

used to get 42-45 when I was up an down country every weekend

thats out of 54 plate (y30dt) vec hatch

if you drive more sensibly you could probably get a lot more

Cool buddy, I'm currently getting 30odd in the 2.0 turbo and that's purely rural driving, so wonder what the 3.0 would do? Less probably haha!

It doesn't seem to drop much less. When I'm off just pottering round town with kids I'm still get high 20s I don't watch mpg as much as I don't really brim tank when I'm off.

but as a say I don't really drive slow either.

That's my thinking buddy, but finding a good one is the hard bit! I have been looking at insignia tourers but tbh for the cash I would have to put down for a nice one I'm struggling to do it cause I just don't like them enough!

The main issue are a small number of expensive problems
This has been the most reliable engine I have ever had
However, it did suffer the infamous blocked SCV at 90K miles which took the dealership some time to diagnose but once done was resolved within one week

All the other problems have been basic Vectra related problems, and no matter what engine you have the car may suffer from it; I put this down to this chassis not coping with wear and tear as well as previous models

I would therefore recommend a comprehensive warranty, that includes engine, DMF, and clutch
These are the most expensive parts to replace and if they have not failed and been replaced, they will fail eventually at some point in the cars life (200K miles / 10 years)

Cheers buddy, not bothered about the normal chassis faults, more along the lines of common faults etc. out of curiosity, what kind of economy do you get when your out in the rural parts of Scotland?
