Default changing the turbo on a 1.9cdti 120

Hi, has anyone changed a turbo on a 1.9cdti 120, mine went pop on boxing day, VX want close to to £1,000 for the privelage which i simliply have not got.

i know that there's quite a few bits to take off, but just wondered if it's more of a time consuming job than a difficult one ?.

    cheers
    John.

I did one on a vectra in the summer. It was relatively straighforward and took me about 5 hours work. Be aware that you do have to drain some of the coolant, discharge the aircon system (my one was already empty due to damaged condenser, and still is!) and disconnect any pipes that are in the way.

I got a supposedly new blower off ebay for £350, gaskets cost another £60 or so.

Can't remember any particular difficulties other than the stupid EGR cooler pipe that connects to the exhaust manifold. But it is concertina type so can carefully be bent out of the way slightly by a helper whilst removing/inserting the manifold/blower assembly. The proper way would be to remove the entire EGR cooler but its quite a faff.

Don't forget also to examine the old one and find out why it failed before starting up on the new one, else it might just go the same way!

Always change the oil using the correct type (5w30 or 5w40 fully synth) and an OEM filter before running on the new turbo in case the failure was caused by old oil or starvation due to blocked filter.

As above only thing different is I didn't Touch the aircon I just moved it to the side.

And don't forget to change the gaskets and coper washers or you will end up with oil all over the drive lol

Here's a pic of the car I did halfway through as the stealers didn't have the turbo in stock the day I stripped it even though when I phoned they said they had one.

thanks for your advise, did you have to remove any of the radiators or could you manouver it out, i know the haynes manual isn't very good sometimes but it doesn't mention anything about disconnecting the aircon -just had mine charged so i don't want disturb it if possible.

    thanks
    John.

Oh no - not the dreaded EGR cooler pipe again! - Some also advise to change the Turbo oil feed pipe when replacing the turbo.

I did one a few months ago , never stripped any of the front end off the car , it was a bit tight but doable .

I had to take the reds away as they were burst so needed new ones anyway but nope if yours is fine you will get to the turbo without taking them right away just disconnect the hoses and move it out the way but while you move it watch the aircon pips you dont want to bend them to far and snap them.

yeah I can see that much , but never took anything off the one I did , airbox out the way & put in the boot , then into the turbo .
suppose the difference might be that I was using the 4 poster at work .
