Leave the lid on the coolant bottle.

use a rag an pair of mole grips on rad hose.

    undo and replace stat

    refit hose remove clamp.

undo coolant lid. Run up and top up as necessary. pump rad hose to help remove air locks
should loose less than 1l doing it that.

Or just drain off the coolant into a clean bucket, via the hose from the thermostat housing.

Once you release the coolant tank cap, then the top hose, the coolant will find its own level through the rad. On the z18xer the other hose goes direct to the water pump, the bypass hose should allow the coolant in the head to drain out into the radiator. You shouldn't lose very much, if any coolant, when you remove the stat.

job done today instead, just drained the coolant from the hose connecting to the stat housing, lost some, but caught 4 litres maybe lost about 1 ltr, issue i have now is i filled the header tank to the usual place and still had 2 ltrs left to put in, ran the car upto temp then there were a few clangs etc and the level dropped in the expansion tank, at this minute its about 1 inch below normal level, but when i run the car the temp gets upto 97 deg,and the tank fills back up with coolant then overflows, the fans arent kicking in and the heaters are blowing cold, ive left it for 30 mins or so running to get all the air out,im leaving it overnight to settle and will run it back upto temp tomorrow, but does it just sound like an airlock somewhere?

    cheers
