    Default New pads-Hot calipers

Hey peps, a wee bit worried. I took off front callipers and cleaned them up as they were creaking and doing my head in but at the same time I unsiezed and greased everything up I said "What the hell" got the wire brush out and cleaned up the discs as best I could and stuck in new pads. So after bleeding I took it for a spin about 10 miles and both callipers were pretty hot but more so the passenger side which had smoke flying out as well, so let it cool down and jacked up that side and checked the wheel was turning freely and there was a slight rub but nothing drastic and the wheel wasn't locked up but took the calliper of again anyway and greased the pins up a bit more and put it back together, wheel was turning fine with the same slight rub, pumped the brakes a few times and checked wheel and still turned fine with slight rub. So let car down again and took it for another spin and went about 10 miles again and various speeds from 50 to 80 and braking as normal and a few hard brakes just to check the stopping power, parked up outside the house and smoke was still flying off the pads on the passenger side, so jacked up the car on that side again and the wheel was still turning freely enough with just a slight rub.

So what I really want to know is this normal behaviour from new pads on the Vectra's and could it be the pads are just bedding in? Should I take the car for a good long drive or just drive as normal? Just bricking it in case they go on fire.

I'm no expert mate but I don't think they should be smoking like that there's usually a kind of burning smell that comes off new brakes but not for long!

Yeah, I get the burning smell as well, I'm gonna take it for another drive and see what happens and if it's still smoking I'll get the grinder onto the discs tomorrow and make sure there are no lips as I think this is what's rubbing, seems like there is a lip near the center of the wheel which must be catching the pad. Only thing I can think of at the minute.

The hint is in the creaking noise when you apply the brake
    The cylinder has seized
It's usually quite easy to tell, but ask someone to stand next to each wheel as you test
You can get away with replacing just the failed one, but I tend to replace both across a car, as this keeps them to the same age and when one fails the other isn't far behind

That's why I took the calipers off mate, I thought the creaking was because they were seized up but stripped them down and they were as free as Nelson Mandela

Anyways, I took it for a 30 mile drive and just back with both calipers luke warm, no smoke, no smell and no creaks. Sweeeeet

Cheers lads, now to find out why my drivers side main beam headlight is pointing towards the passenger side, changed the blubs last Sunday and just noticed tonight, must have put one in wrong way round or summit plus gonna tackle the clicking on the heater fan when on 1 and 2 and sort out the creaking glove box, that one is really getting on my nerves Plenty to keep me busy for a few hours tomorrow.

Only place for seized caliper is the bin
You can briefly grease and free them up, but it is a short term fix
I had the rears on mine serviced in the summer, but both have since failed and been replaced
The front failed at just 18 months old, replaced under warranty, so I had the other replaced at my own cost

    Are they genuine pads?

could be that their getting hot and expanding causing them to stick in the carrier.

The pads I got were Juratek. Seems to be driving fine now and think it's settled itself ok. I'll just keep an eye on it over the next few days anyway.
