Default 2.0 dti started first time, then cut out, wont restart !!

hi all and a merry christmas !
first time in 18 months and over 20,000 miles i have had to ask for advise,
had my 04 vectra 2.0 dti parked up for about 2 weeks (really cold weather), went to start and it started first time , as usual, but then after about 30 seconds, cut out and will not restart, it was a little low on fuel (ie fuel light flashing) but i have been this low before with no problems, put the spare can of fuel in, still would not start.
initial thoughts after reading loads of posts is the fuel pump, but also read other reasons as well.
has anyone else had this happen?, no lights show up on the dashboaord, (i dont have a fault code reader)
    any thoughts very very welcome
    best wishes to all, polyroly

Fill fuel filter to brim. And try again if still no joy.

If still no joy get some carb/ brake cleaner sprayed into inlet (after air filter)

if you don't have any then a can of lynx etc may do the trick to get it going to draw enough fuel through.

my 2.0 dti did this when i changed the fuel filter, there's a air lock somewhere in the system

as suggested above, you will need a fuel primer tool and also fill the fuel filter container full to the brim

it will take a couple of turns to fire, but it will run..... eventually

many thanks for replies, i will have a look for a primer, (my old rover 45 had one ), but when i did actually run out of diesel, it was not powerful enough to get it going so had to go into the garage to have the system bled/repressureised, sounds like this tool is far superior!!

Try getting a tow start if you need it going in a hurry. Sounds like the fuel has drained back while the car has been parked. You'll need a good 1/4 mile tow though

hi, not had chance to even look at it over the christmas period, !!, had the dreaded flu, so not going out , next week looks like a good opportunity, the vecky is mainly our summer car, tows caravan and we go big distances in it, still a boot load of camping stuff in it !, so will have to have a good clear out to access various bits before i retax it, winter time only used on rare occasions, hence parked up, (just wish i had not let the fuel go down so low), you live and learn!!

Hi,I had same prob,it's air getting into system ie,through leak off pipes or injector seals which causes fuel to drain back to the tank.leak off pipes are easy and cheap to replace,if your fuel filter is black it's inj seals!hope this helps.
