i had fender precision, not cheap but very nice sound. best bet is to go look at a few and buy what you like the look of ,oh and make sure it "fits" you ok,some guitars just didnt hang right for me hth
whats your budget ?
tbh steer clear of the really cheap one, encores etc as they are pants
what style do you like , fender , rickenbacker , flying v , etc
if i was buying i would go on ebay , and look , distance nearest first , might be something ok nearby , and most people will let you have a blast !
Most Yamaha's are probably a fairly safe bet. I bought an ibanez G10 to do some recording demos with. Sounded fine. I think it was only about £120. If you're looking on ebay, keep an ey out for Westone bases. They were a cheap Japanese made instrument but are slowly becoming vintage. They're great to play and sound nice too.
this could be a rough diamond

Very cheap for a full set up so don't expect quality. If you decide that bass playing is not for you then you'll not regret spending £115 on this. You can always upgrade if you decide you like it too. I learned to play the guitar on an old beat up nylon strung spanish style guitar with the advice of 'if you can play that, you can play anything'.
I have a couple of bass guitars but i like my thunderbird pro bass by epiphone which are gibson changed a couple things on it but its great and have a few amps but my personnel favourite is laney you have to really go and try them out as they all sound diff if your just starting out maybe go for a fender rumble amp all diff sizes
This worth a punt do you think chaps.

If you can handle fretless?!?
Good for "Music for Chameleons by Gary Numan.
I got a cracking Aria from Cash Convertors for £50, I have had a Vintage bass (based on P-Bass) was okay, Yamaha RBX-270 very good though and 24 frets too. You cant beat getting your hands on one. Cheap ones are great but expensive ones are inspiring.
Laney RB-1 or RB-2 are cracking practice amps, look to pay 30-50. Had both, RB-1 at moment, plenty enough for bedroom. Also VOX Bass plug is brilliant, decent headphones and you are away, stop windows shaking.
