    Thumbs down suspected alternator failure

    Hello all,

In the last month the vectra has cost me £800 for mot, service, new calipers, discs, pads on the rear.New front tyres, droplinks and a new thermostat. Mainly wear and tear items but still a bit of an outlay just before christmas. Then I was driving the car this morning and the battery light came on,however once I had collected my suit from the dry cleaners it didn't come back on for the full journey home. However when I went a ten mile journey to pick up the wife in the afternoon the stereo switched off then I lost power steering and got the abs and traction control lights on the dash too. This happened just before the entrance to bend, squeeky bum time indeed! So I stopped the car after the bend and got the multi meter from the boot, 11.88 v with ignition off and 9.98v with engine running. Then the car wouldn't start the first few times I tried after checking the battery but after leaving it for a couple of minutes it started but still with the lights on the dash and no power steering. So,does this sound like an alternator failure to all you knowledgeable people?

    Thanks,

    Ross.

Oh that's something I never thought of, however the heater still works.would I be correct in thinking the fan wouldn't blow if the belt was goosed?

Tony, I don't know and haven't needed to know yet thankfully , but, do you know what the Vx price is for a replacement version ? I just wondered how it would come out with a 25% discount from the "Masterfit Club" and then compared with the Europart version ?

Not sure on the Vx price for the part. But when mine went, I got the 130amp one from Euro Car Parts (part number 401721772) for £171.00

Yes most defos, my Clio the bearing in the alternator went and I had the headlight lights and everything on but the light didnt come on, I dont know why must have been just enof charge for the light to stay off, so anyway the abs light came on power steering went, lol it had a party but the battery light never came on, so sound like it mate, if ure struggling cash wise get a reconned one to get u by, they take ures and refurb it and give u a refurbed one, u would be lookin at like half price, gets u by. Mines lasted another year or two and I got rid of the car still workin fine.
