Gear Lever not self centering/Very Stiff - 1.9cdti
The gear lever on my 2005 1.9cdti 150 has recently become very stiff. It wont self centre in neutral and 2nd to 3rd and 5th to 4th have become awkward to select.
I have oiled and greased all parts below the gear lever but no difference.
I did a search here to see if it is a common problem but didnt find anything. I searched Saab forums and it seems that it is the "turret" on the gearbox that corrodes and causes the stiffness. Does the Saab 9-3 1.9 tid share the same gearbox/mechanism as the Vectra 1.9cdti? They suggest replacing the part in the link.

Has anybody else come across this problem?

my lever is the same, really stiff left to right in neutral and doesnt self centre. Sprayed grease into the ball joints under the gaiter and no change. I used it to haggle plenty of the purchase price but would love to get it sorted. Let us know if this saab kit fits the vectra's box

Has anybody else come across this? Its getting very annoying now.
From just looking at the selector on top of the gearbox it does seem to be the same as fitted to the Saab 9-3. Might buy that kit on ebay and give it a go.

It's more than likely the selector turret.
it is same as a Saab did a Saab one the other day.
not a hard job at all.about 1 Hour to change. But not cheap iirc 250 retail from vauxhall.
aquick check is to pop ball joints off selector turret. If gear stick now moves freely try moving the turret you'll more than likely find it very stiff.
if gear stick doesn't move freely with ball joints disconnects then its more than likely gear cables

done a couple of saabs at work with this problem & it is the pin on the left to right pivoting part of the linkage & the first one i did I drilled the pin out & filed the hole out , greased it & put a small nut & bolt through the pin on reassembly , only down side to this was having to remove the turret from the box .
the last one I did I drilled a small pilot hole in the alloy that the pin passes through & soaked it in penetrating oil a few times ( left to soak in ) this sorted it out a treat without the need to dismantle anything .

Ive sorted this problem out with no expense.
I removed the battery and battery tray to allow clear access to the gear selector. I then removed the gear cables...they just pop off the ball joints. With these removed I checked the gear stick to see if the movement was still stiff... It wasn't. This meant that it was definitely the gear selector on top of the gearbox that was at fault.
It is the up and down movement of the selector that becomes stiff. I applied oil to the joint a couple of times and moved it around and the gear change is now back to the way it should be. Might be helpful if anybody else has this problem in the future. Something so simple but very annoying!

My vectra has just developed the same problem. I have just found this video on utube showing how to carry out the turret repaid using the parts from the ebay link from Gmc12 seems quite easy :- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFd_zp4f7GY (it says for the saab geabox).
Thanks everyone for the posts on this, they have been very helpful.
