Default what can cause a brake pad check light to appear randomly?

was told there was only one sensor (on passenger front wheel), its been cable tied to hold it in place, i thought that must be the cause of it, so cut off the sensor end and joined the 2 wires together temporary, but it still comes on every now and again, and stays on till you restart the car?
fluid is about centre between the max and min marks in the resevoir, could it be that? if so how do i find out which brake fluid it takes?

    its a 2003 1.8 sri

The brake pad warning and brake fluid level warnings are not the same
This suggests the cable itself is at fault and needs to be replaced

Changed my sensor lead a few days ago, cost £12.26 with trade card from vx. The lead is about 30cm long.
It goes from the NSF brake pads to around the front strut and plugs into another plug inside the wheel arch.
Take the wheel off and turn the steering wheel fully left, better access.

cheers, will have to have a better look, its no better with the wires joined about 3" from where the sensor was, so the problem must be further back

When I did my pads a few months ago they'd worn down enough that the lipped edge of the disc had made contact with the sensor and mangled it...
