Default Can I check if my cambelt has been done?

Hi, My Signum 1.9 cdti 120 has just ticked over 80k miles so thinking seriously about getting the cambelt done.

I had a look in the service book and at the point of buying the car there were 2 stamps in the service history that I didn't fully trust as they looked to have been done by the same person on the same day (probably the dealer). The second, at 72k miles shows the belt as being replaced.

Are there any telltale signs that the belt has been done? I.e. worn fixings, snapped clips etc...

Ps. as an aside, how much have you guys paid for your cambelt, tensioners and water pump replacments?

    Thanks.

Think I will play safe and get it done, was just wondering if there was a way to confidently know if it was done or not.

Not that I know of, some dealers keep a record, that's what I did to be told the belt had not been done but the book was ticked!

Only way you will know for sure that it has been done is to have it done yourself.

As there are two stamps in the Service Book
Write to the dealership (or each if they are different)
Include a photocopy of the page of the Service Book and the VRN
Ask for a printout of the service details that were carried out, or a list of parts that were fitted, with the original payees details removed

There are various types of services, so even though the cambelt may have been due on a service it may not have been included

Also, the cambelt change is recorded at the back of the Service Book, there is a separate section for this
However it is quite often overlooked and never completed (and I go to town on the dealership when they omit this)

Its not reached the VX Service intervals for the 1.9 so its doubtful. Remember to get the water pump changed as this the reason most belts fail on the 1.9's. You could always try calling the last owner and ask him if its been done.

When I bought the wife's car there were a pile of receipts for it but no mention of a timing belt. I emailed the garage that the lady used and they said no timing belt change according to their records.

Unless there is a specific box to be ticked to indicate the cambelt has been changed, then more than likely it won't have been.

Thats because the cambelt isn't part of routine servicing because change intervals are diffferent between engines and models. There would have to be 1001 service books printed instead of a "one book fits all needs".

It's like the brake fluid change - i.e. needs to be requested separately as it's a recommendation, not compulsory.
