    Depends on the part.

Aftermarket stuff can be ok but its down to who makes it.

Just tonight I priced up a set of discs and pads. Vauxhall were £130, Pagid (Top quality aftermarket) were £90 then 2 other makes that came in about £60.

Pagid are top quailty and £40 cheaper so went for them rather than the other 2 makes that I dont know much about.

Some pattern parts are just as good as the GM ones, but there are some where only GM will do. The camshaft and crank position sensors on a Z18XE for example. Thermostats are best replaced with the housing (ie how GM supply them), but if the housing isn't worn you can get away with just the stat itself. Unfortunately you won't know if the housing is worn unless you remove it from the engine...

If you can't afford the genuine parts ....

Edd China always says , go for reconditioned originals

    before patent parts

as they are the original spec for the job .

If its anything with bushes like wishbone arms I'd recommend genuine, but for run of the mill items like brakes and service items pattern is usually more than good enough, you normally find genuine filters are made by Mann or hengst (sp)so just ask for them, motor factors like euro's tend to carry cheap pattern and oe quality parts, but gm are usually quite competitive with their prices so it can pay to check prices first

    Tell me about it.

Seems stupid that the Astra 308mm kit costs more than the Vectra 314mm kit.
