    Default 2.0DTi starting problems

    Hi,

    just bought a 2004 2.0DTi

When i start the car the glow light comes on and it starts fine.

12 hours later after finishing work it starts fine aswel.

But if i was to go shopping and return to the car an hour later for instance the glow lights don't come on and the car struggles a lot to start ( 3 or 4 attempts / and a lot of white smoke )

Once the car is started if you were to turn it off and try and start it straight away it will have the same problem,

    can anybody help please?

    cheers
    dave

    Probably a starter motor fault.

Have it checked by auto electrician.

IT sounds very much like the leak off pipes, not a starter problem.

Mines exactly the same. When it is very cold, below 3 degrees I think, the glow plugs activate, and it starts quickly. When over that, the car struggles to start. I put my foot flat to the floor and keep doing it up and down and it starts eventually. Basically there are pipes which connect to the injectors. When the engine is switched off, they take the fuel back to the tank. What you've most likely got it splits in the rubber pipes. This is a very common fault in the DTi engines, as many other DTi owners will confirm.

The good news is that it is a cheap job. You just buy the same rubber pipes for a tenner and replace yourself. I'm sure someone will correct any information I've got wrong and help you with what to do. I haven't done it yet so I can't help on that manner, however all your problems are identical to mine.

A tip for you, park the car facing downwards. If you park it uphill it will be very hard to start.

Nah never leak off pipes, if it starts ok from cold after being left for more than 8 hours there's fuel at the injectors not air.

But its a cheap fix and should be done as a matter of course.

The reason its probably the sarter is when its hot/warm the stater internals are heated up and can become slow to turnover,
when cold the internals have contracted allowing the starter to spin more freely.
This can work both ways as with the z19dt/h engines where the starter does the opposite, bad cold start good warm starting.

depends what year the car is , my 2003 dti was a right pain to start & I did my research , testing things etc .
I found out that it would start much better when cold if the temp sensor was unplugged , so rang the dealer & found out about field remedy 1579 .
this involves reprogramming the ECU software so that the glow plugs come on sooner & also alters the fuelling on start up.
since having this done mine starts a lot better hot or cold .

Right i have the same problem and i have discovered this happens when the egr valve gets stuck open
to check this take the grey half round cover off the egr and when this happens push hook shape bar down
    and away you go

My old astra 2.0dti (which my mother inherited when I bought the signum) was exactly like this.

Guess how I fixed it? Another map edit :-)

after that I learned about the field remedy. but as I already had my remapping kit my dear mother didn't have to pay the stealers a penny. I just tweaked the glow timer map.

Got home at 8pm, parked car outside. Went to start at 11pm and it doesn't start, just cranking.

When I go to start in the morning, it'll start in one turn of the key.

So whenever I leave the car for a few hours, it doesn't start. If I leave it overnight so it gets cold, it starts.
