confused Strong Exhust Smell in car - just started happening!!

I am getting a very srtong exhaust smeel inside the car. It is very strong when the engine is cold or when you are stopped in heavy traffic, and gets less when the engine has warmed up.
I have changed the Cabin Pollen Filter but has not made any difference.
Also the car is running fine and it is a 1.9 150 bhp on a 58 plate with 64,000 miles on the clock.

    Any help would be appreciated?

Burst Flexy or a leaking EGR Valve possibly.

When you say a burst flexy - what do you mean?

The flexible section of the front pipe may have burst. Get under the car and you should be able to feel any escaping gas, around the mesh part.

Just one minor point and not diagnostic of the problem which you need to actually resolve, but this will make no difference at all if you just used the standard paper one, you need to fit the activated carbon one for it to make any difference to fumes what so ever.

Totally agree. I have recently fitted a standard pollen filter and because it is clean, I can actually smell the fumes more. the carbon one is the one you need!

Just had my EGR cooler pipe split, ones on Ebay didn't come with pipe i needed, however mines an 8V and I couldn't just buy the pipe either, so it cost me £100 from dealers for the whole thing and I had some smell of fumes when I first started the car or stationary, think this was the cause but not sure how long it had been split.

Interesting point about the carbon filter, I just fitted a standard one
