    Default Auto gear box reliability...

Thinking of upgrading to a 150 derv Auto,i need some input from forum members as to how they stack up in reliability stakes,i have never owned an auto box car in my life mainly due to horror stories back in the 80s,of boxes giving up the ghost after 30odd k miles.

I have no experience of that particular engine, but I think you may have answered your own question (mainly due to horror stories back in the 80s,of boxes giving up the ghost after 30odd k miles).
My car is 3.2 auto 8 years old and never misses a beat, remember technology has come a long way since the 80s.
3.2 v6 Signum and loving it

And with coming along way, repair bills have grown.
My dad a few years back bought a tdi passat my00 with tip-tronic box. Belting car for the money, or was til the gearbox started getting issues, Diy removal and reffiting and the repair bill was still 1300-1400 quid.
The boxes are coded so you couldn't just use any tip-tronic box.
Not saying the vectra auto will be the same, but auto boxes are great til they go wrong, and nobody wants to work on them.
My dad's Omega v6 had selector issues which was a easy enough fix after man'ing up enough to start taking it to bits.

Well guys, I'm driving my 7th Vx Auto and have never had a problem with any of the cars I've used. All cars serviced per schedule and all have clocked over 120k miles before being sold on for newer models.
IMO you would be nothing less than just plain "unlucky" if you bought an automatic Vectra that had been well looked after and then had problems. Personally, as said previously, problems of the 80's have to a great extent been overcome.
One area I would steer away from is messing with the gearbox oil, I have heard stories of owners who have changed the oil pretty much just for the sake of it, and run into difficulty shortly afterwards, so from that point of view, I would leave that to a main dealer if and when it requires it.
Anyway, in summary, Vx Auto boxes have been trouble free for me and have always done just what they are supposed to, cleanly and smoothly.

    I have a 55 reg 2.2 Petrol Auto.

Bought with about 15k miles, now on 76k miles. Autobox has been great. I had the autobox oil changed at 74k miles as a precaution - well actually the downchanges from 2nd to 1st had become a little lumpy (only if I was looking for it though...). The gearbox oil change resolved the issue. I took it to a reputable garage and they downloaded the Vauxhall Technical Bulletin so they could follow the exact process.

The Vectra autoboxes are made by Aisin Warner - they are Japanese and also used in Toyotas - hence the reliability.

I've had several Cavalier 2.0 CDX Autos in the past (great great cars) and never had a problem with the autoboxes (also Aisin Warner).

    HTH.

Sorry to hijack this thread but, I'd also like to know what the auto boxes are like on 3.0CDTI (z30dth). Any issues or anything to look out for?
I would prefer a manual but there aren't many around so may have to compromise with an auto. Also what is it like in semi-auto mode?

It'll be the same gearbox across the range.

Semi auto works, it's handy on steep hills to lock the torque converter, but to be honest, you have a play with it and then you just think **** it, leave it in D.
