    confused 5th cam belt snap!

vectra 1900 diesel 2008 dtci. Iv had this problem 5 times in the last 2 years and twice had engine rebuilds. This being the second. The other times I could here the timing coming out of sync so stopped the engine. It always happens when the alternator belt snaps. The alternator belt deteriorates and becomes entwined with the cam belt which skips a few notches and ******s up the engine. Which is preceded with a few days of squeaking of the alt belt. Im a taxi driver so all faults come round very quickly. What can I replace to stop the alternator belt from squeaking and snapping?

check all the ancillaries on the belt are aligned right if not will cause the belt to ware out quicker than norm

also if you a taxi driver doing high miles change the belt on every service there only a few quid extra on top of the service

also check the tensioner is not worn

yeah cant help but think a little cash in preventative maintenance would save you the large bills, its about £12 for a new belt and fitted in 30 mins and a squirt of belt slip once every couple of weeks will help stop the belt from drying out and cracking too

Taxi drivers vary rarely have there cars serviced properly most only have what needs doing so that wouldn't work.
Im sure if the belt was changed when the "squeeling" noise started you wouldn't be in this position.
As has been said proventative maintenance would prove worthwhile

Even for a taxi, five alternator belts in two years is incredibly high numbers. My cars only on it's second in 8 and a bit years, I appreciate the mileage difference is immense but even then.

Are you actually fitting new belts each time or second hand ones?
