Default Need advice on a gaming console

OK people I am really hoping that you can advise on the best choice for my 8 year old.

We are thinking along the lines of the X-box Kinect 250Gb and looking round the price seems to be about £250/270 with one or two games included.

    Is this about right as
    1. we see the 4GB version for almost £100 less
    2. the 250Gb console without the Kinect is about £200

I reckon it needs the Kinect really but open to advice.

    My tuppence worth......

The 4GB is a false economy in my eyes, and isn't really worth considering.

The Kinect is good, but like the Wii, the novelty of jumping about to control games does wear off. You also need to look at whether you realistically have enough room in front of your television to use it properly. For a single adult playing, the recommended distance you need to be from the screen is about 2 metres. With additional players, more space is obviously required. In saying all that though, it is still good fun, my kids loved it. If you can get it as part if a bundle at a good price then I'd say go for it.

Thanks guys, yes the 4Gb was where I started till I noticed the massive jump in capacity to the 250Gb PC World has the 4 game pack for £259 I think and looks my best bet so far for backup and aftersales.

The room it's going in to has plenty space as we will stick it upstairs in an empty bedroom, and use with a 42" plasma TV that has the connections and cabling needed. For an 8 year old I think the Kinect will keep her amused as we plan to add the Disneyland game to the bundle for her as well

As others have said, 4Gb would be a false economy. It'd only take a few demo game downloads and you'd have filed it up already!

I had a 120Gb Elite version and that was getting tight for space with demos etc., plus I like to transfer the discs to the hard drive so that the console is quieter, so I got the 250Gb Slim version and the extra space is definitely worthwhile.

What 'may' be worth considering is that I've seen a couple of special edition versions of the console, think it may have been COD, and they come with a 320Gb drive which you can actually buy separately, so all depending on the prices it may be worth looking at the 4Gb version with Kinect bundle and adding the 320Gb drive. It's a simple swap without having to undo screws etc., just a panel on the side that clips open. You'd need the transfer cable to copy the contents from the 4Gb to the 320Gb. They're about £15 or I'm sure someone, myself included, would let you borrow theirs to do the transfer.

The Kinect is fun, but as others said can vary in usefulness depending on the game. My eldest boy is four and he's now at the age where he's able to use the Kinect on simpler games, some I've bought and some that were free (he loves the Wreckateer one! lol) so an eight year old will have no problem. Just make sure you have a decent amount of room in front of the TV.

EDIT: Quick look on Amazon brings up 4Gb console with Kinect and Disneyland Adventures for £200 and the 320Gb drive for £65 so for around the same/slightly more than the 250Gb bundle price you get a bigger drive. You may even find better deals/bundles on the 4Gb elsewhere but that shows a good comparison of going down the 4Gb console/320Gb drive route.
