Angry Why do they do this ..............

Perhaps its me being a bit neurotic - but...... I take my dogs a walk at 6am every morning and to get into the fields I have to walk through part of a residential estate - obviously it's dark at this time and especially these last few frosty mornings I pass several cars unattended with the engines running to defrost - some on drives and some on road - not a problem - but what I can't understand is why do the majority of them have there headlights on, some on full beam. One bloke came out as I passed got in the car switched his headlights on and then started the engine! A cars battery gets a right hammering on these icy mornings as does the whole electrical system, alternator, etc. why add to the load - as well as drawing attention to the fact your car is left unattended and insecure - and that's before you start to consider the economics with extra fuel, etc.

    Rant over

I appreciate people need to defrost their cars - it's the headlight bit I can't understand. I am fortunate to have a driveway and can reverse up to the garage door - if I need to defrost the cars I run an extension lead from the garage to the car and then put a small fan heater, I keep for this purpose, in the car - go and have a nice cup of tea and by the time it's drunk the car is defrosted and ready to go.

I only turn mine on while scraping. don't use de-icer as it I don't think it is effective and makes things worse. Get in after 1 minute of scraping .. lights on and away, car is warm in 2 to 3 mins.

I don't use deicer also as overspray strips your wax... Rather let it run...

I don't find it very effective anyway and as you say I wouldn't think it will do your paintwork any good

When i set off in the morning, its dark, so while my car is defrosting, i bang on the headlights (after the car is started) due to them being iced up. Surely its more of a hazard for me and other road users, if my headlights are being obscured and the light being refracted?

I never leave my car unattended, i have a smoke while waiting.. once that is done i'm off.

Or even DRL, you cannot switch them off when the car is running.
