New Speed Limits from 01.01.2007

Just got this from our fleet department. It had escaped me - maybe because it doesn't really affect the car-driving Joe Average... but interesting nonetheless (hope the format is okay

):

As of 1ST January 2007 the speed limits are to change, the chart below has been devised to advise you of the new speed limits split by vehicle category.
Note: You MUST NOT exceed the maximum speed limits for the road and for your
vehicle (see the table below). Street lights usually mean that there is a 30 mph speed limit unless the road signs state otherwise.

· All speeds noted below are measured in MPH
Built up areas * Single carriageways Dual carriageways Motorway
Cars & Motorcycles (incl. Car-derived vans)

Cars towing caravans or Trailers (Including car derived vans )
30 50 60 60
Vans (Not exceeding 3.5 tonnes maximum laden weight)
30 50 60 70
Goods vehicles (Exceeding 3.5 tonnes maximum laden weight up to 7.5 tonnes)
30 50 56 56
Goods vehicles (Exceeding 7.5 tonnes)
30 40 50 56
These are the national speed limits and apply to all roads unless signs show otherwise

* The 30 mph limit applies to all traffic on all roads in England and Wales (only Class C and unclassified roads in Scotland) with street lighting unless signs show otherwise)

Note: The speed limit is the absolute maximum and does not mean it is safe to drive
at that speed irrespective of conditions. Driving at speeds too fast for the road and
traffic conditions can be dangerous. You should always reduce your speed when

• The road layout or condition presents hazards, such as bends
• Sharing the road with pedestrians and cyclists, particularly children, and
Motorcyclists
• Weather conditions make it safer to do so
• Driving at night as it is harder to see other road users.

Goods Vehicles will never stick to 56!!

I was just thinking the same thing - Comet delivery drivers come past me at 70+ in their "3.5 - 7.5t" black crates!

as of april as far as I understand it the rules come in to play, we've certainly not been briefed on it yet. Talking to a few people some have mentioned that vehicles over 3.5tonne MAM will have to be limited to 56, I know the AA have already limited their 3.5-7.5 tonne vehicles. I've also heard mention of introducing taco's to all in that class.

All vehicles over 3.5 tonnes registered after 1st Jan 2005 have been limited to 56mph (90 KPH).

Most over 3.5 tonnes registered since october 2001 have had to be retrofitted with one too.

Also these vehicles are banned from using the outside overtaking lane except in an emergency or directed by a police officer or other official.

This will be ammended to include Transit style vans too.

All vehicles over 3.5t to a maximum of 7.5t must by the end of this month be limited to a maximum speed of 56mph any operator or company that fails to do this will face a fine of £20,000 per vehicle and then the chance that they may lose there operators licence. after the 31/1/2007 any driver of a vehicle that has not been limited may get a fine of £2,000 per infringment of each tacho for the month b4 and 6 points on there licence so the driver could run up a fine of £62,000.

all vehicles over 3.5t must by law have a tacho fitted.

we was told at work way back in april last year of the changes.

yep thats true as of 01/01/2008

if its made to carry goods its included ie:- astra van to sprinter some pickups may be included in this depending on weight.

The main point of these changes is to separate the difference between vans with tacho and light commercial vehicles with tacho
Basically, anything with a tacho will become restricted to 56mph
