    Default Heat issue 1.8 '03

    Hi all,

Before its said I / we (Caveman Nige) have been through the other posts with similar issues and checked all that's mentioned and in addition to that there is no "outcome" post.

Ok, firstly many thanks to Nigel for giving up his time yesterday only to be left with a head scratcher!!

The symptom : intermittent reading on the temp gauge and blowing cold air from the vents.

What we done : Drained coolant, complete coolant flush, replaced radiator (needed as rad was knackered), replaced stat, replaced coolant.

Ran engine, no air locks, water leaks, all pipes secure and hot water running through them, matrix pipes have heat in them.

    Still no heat in car!!

Checked forum, checked behind L/H/S centre console for the red heater servo thing - this moves when the dial is adjusted. The temp gauge works / moves and the fan cuts in where it should.

This said, there was minimal heat from the screen vents on the 70 mile journey home but only when the speed was on number 1, if turned up to 2 then the fan got quicker as expected but the heat was greatly reduced. When changed to the lower / footwell vents then almost no air movement at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated by me and Nige!!

    Cheers

    Tony

I had a chat with Paul about this last night mate, he thinks you may still have air lock.

His suggestion is to run the car again without the header tank cap as we did but this time to get it hotter. He suggests that you need to get the temp to above 100 degrees to make it boil so force out any further air locks. With the cap on the system is pressurized and boils a ta higher temp. To acheive this you will need to run it up to temp without the cap and then use the throttle pedal and give it some revs.

Obviously you want to do this while the car is stationery as we did yesterday.

The other thing i always do is fill up coolant through a small funnel so it fills slowly to give air a chance to escape

did you change just the stat or the full housing? ive seen on here that the housings wear away around the stat and let them leak around ? but sounds poss a faulty stat has been know for them to be new but still not work have you tested it in hot water to check when it opens and its not opening to early you only need it to stick open a fraction for it stay cold the frontera 2.2 petrol is prone for boiling the engines and doing the h/g in so i ran drilled (only 4mm) stat in the sumer help keep it cool and standard stat in the winter and when the fisrt light frost cold days startd i had to change to the standard cos it would only get warm when stuckin traffic then when colder the faster the truck/fan speed so the slightist ill fitting or opening early would show as the symptons your saying hth

OK people - beginning to think my car is messing with my emotions!!!

Just took it out for a quick run up the road (3 mile round trip) and I have heat pouring into the car on all fan speed settings!!!! Temp goes to 90+ and the fan comes on, the gauge works and I had a warm journey for the first time!! confused . com.

Can only think if there was a small air lock then it may well of cleared on this attempt. I will keep you all posted if any further issues with this arise.

Thank you to you all for you input, really has been appreciated.

    Tony
