Had very similar problems. Turned out yo be a faulty coilpack. Got a second hand unit for 60 quid and its been fine since.

If you near to me i could hook up the laptop to see what errors you may have.

Common problem on the 1.8 vvt btw

They need to read the codes to diagnose the problems. The VVTi is a good engine, has less problems then the popular diesels.

Without reading the codes it is hard to diagnose the problems. A duff plug or coil can cause misfiring. They have cam phaser solenoids to activate the VVTi, these can stop working properly and will throw up the engine management light and put the car into limp mode. Thankfully the solenoids are a doddle to change.

As long as the eml is not flashing you will be okay.

Im amazed the garage does not know what it is.

As said above you need to have the codes read.

I would guess you may have a cylinder missfire

I think you just need some reassurance! Just try not to get disheartened. A cambelt is a consumable most cars have them and they all need changing when they get to the interval and this time of year a battery is a common thing on any car that is more than a couple of years old..... Equally I beleive it is a boosh alternator on it and they again they can go on any car, especially if the battery has been a bit duff for a while!

Check the coil pack. Common problem on many modern cars if the plugs are not regapped or changed.. The spark plugs should be changed every 30k I believe, yet most people nowadays never do them.... Look through the service history and if you cannot find spark plugs I bet its that.... Otherwise solenoids as antowens said.....

Really you need to get the codes read otherwise we are all just guessing! Hope you fix it quickly and cheaply.

I would be telling the garage you bought it off that the car is not fit for purpose and therefore you want and need for it to be repaired to a standard that you will be happy with,if not then tell them you don't want it and get your money back.I bought mine from a Vauxhall dealer in Darlington and they have been spot on with any problems i have had, they also have a dealership in Stockton-which is not far from you and if you find that you have to hand the car back in to the one in Redcar i would be giving this dealer a call to see what they have in stock. You don't have to put up with this type of treatment.I would also stop having a try to fix the car yourself as this may cancel what ever warranty you have. Hope you get sorted out soon-----Dave
