    Default Freewheeling noise help please?!

Under accleration or braking everything is fine...

The moment I push the clutch pedal in or unstress the engine or take my foot off the brake (freewheeling) I get a thud-thud-thud noise on driver's side font wheel, that is directly propertionate to the speed I'm going..

    20mph...thud..................thud................ thud................thud

    60mph..thud..thud..thud..thud..thud..thud..thud... thud

    Wheel bearing?

the tyre is not losing presuure, and I can't see any lodged stones or screws/nails...no huge vibration either

    Any help gratefully received!

    ta

    Andy

wheel bearings will 'hum' and will have come on over a while.. if it's more of a deeper note then i'd still be looking toward the tyres..have you had them off and inspected them for tread block seperation or damage to the ply's of the tyres??..

you can also inspect the driveshaft and CV joint and their gaiters as well then..

and you've done the obvious??.. checked the wheel bolts are all tight??..

I had something similar once, also after having new tyres fitted.
The numpties at the garage hadn't tightened the wheel nuts up properly!.

Acceleration or braking were fine, just a sort of thumping the rest of the time which got to the point that acceleration followed by braking resulted in a slight clonk!.

By the time I stopped to check, the bolts were really quite loose.

Nowadays I check all the wheel nuts myself if a garage has had a wheel off for any reason.

Choki that sounds just like what I'm hearing...

As for the sound being there before, I couldn't say because the stereo was always on.... although I'm 60% sure its started since the new wheels... too much of a coincidence.

    thanks all.

I too had said problem due to loose wheel bolts but I would have to admit that I did said myself....

Never the less I did about 30 miles down the motorway before I worked out what it was but I didn't want to stop so I kept going and did another 70+mile before I stopped. I could take most of the bolts out with my fingures when I did stop, which made me think a bit.

Shouldn't the tyre place have told me to check the bolts after a 100 miles or so?.... mind you the new bolts are too big for my standard Vauxhall wheel wrench thing... thank god its having its alignment and balance checked at 11.30... Hope the wife made it there without a wheel falling off...

Well there we have it, Hi-Q of Eastleigh failed to locate the wheel right...alledgedly....not quite sure how you can do that with 5 bolts to hold it in place, but apparently the spigot ring wasn't installed properly.

Its fixed now. Thanks for your help people
