Default VIRGIN T.V. = Getting out of Subscription ...

We have a Virgin television subscription at present .

But Sky T.V. has offered us a " Come Back " deal of £ 20 a month for 12 months , for Films , family , entertainment and Docs ( basically everything except Sports ) .... And Sky will give us £ 50 towards the first payments , so nothing to pay until February .

So we ring up Virgin to cancel .

I have to give you a bit of back history here ...

My lass had the Virgin account at her previous house before she moved back in with me , this contract was from November 2011 and she transfered the Virgin contract to my house in July 2012 , so we expected the contract to be ended this November 2012 .

The bloke from Virgin on the phone said ... As she had moved house , the contract started again in July at the new address and was not a continuation from the old house , therefore we have to continue paying Virgin until July 2013 or " Buy Out The Contract " costing £ 99 + one month of £ 66 .

When my lass changed houses , she never signed anything to say she had started a new contract and was not told verbally .

So , should her contract run a straight full 12 months from her old house ( Nov 2011 ) to my house ( Nov 2012 )

or is it true that she would have started a new 12 month contract at my house in July 2012 , still in her name ?

We asked for a customer / complaint number and the Virgin bloke said there was only a website to complain on and guess what ? It is not working at the moment ...

My other half thinks she has discovered a litttle trick to make Buying Out The Contract a little cheaper if you are forced to pay .

Apparently , the large Virgin T.V. packages command a higher monthly buy out price compared to a minimum T.V. packages .

    e.g.

Large T.V. package deal costing about £ 66 per month would cost maybe £ 15 per month to buy the remaining months of your contract out ...

So 6 months left would cost you £ 90 plus one month of £ 66 .

    So , here's what you do ...

Reduce all your T.V. packages down to a medium size , i.e. £ 23 a month and the monthly Buy Out price is FREE .

So all you need to pay is a one month notice payment of £ 23 .

I won't pay for TV deals.. I think I've got 80 channels to choose from which is dear enough with the TV license alone so I won't have this issue. I dread to think of the annual cost for a good loaded tv package.

Unfortunately the sport only seem to be on these pay channels which is unfair really. Damn media - they rule the waves and your wallets!!

Look for terms and conditions on wesite to see if when you move house that the contract starts again, If it does not say that moving house starts a new conrtact then ask for the recorded telephone conversation that Virgin have stating that your other half agreed to a new 12 month contract.

Thanks , Ziggy , i agree a change of contract by Virgin ( price increase ) would be a valid reason to leave ,

but we ain't had one , unfortunately .

What do you think of the package reduction idea above ?

Today , we have reduced the Virgin package to minimum ( £ 23 per month ) and taken on the Sky deal ( £ 20 per month for everthing but sports ) and in January we will cancel the Virgin contract with only one month to pay and NO monthly penalties .

Even with paying both companies , it is still cheaper than the original Virgin bill of £ 66 per month .

kin ell,.. so Virgin would be nearly £800 a year to watch stuff!!.. blimey.
I had sky when it was £15 a month, but thought there were too many repeats on to warrant the charge. I guess the package becomes a good deal when you have broadband and telephone etc all in?

    Sorry,.. I digress,.. ignore me.

I dont know what they have told you but its nothing to do with moving. However virgin media have an 18month contract unlike sky's 12 month, which would explain the longer running time, or atleast most of it. But bear in mind that if you have other options on your package it broadband, virgins fibre optic broadband is on average 8x faster than the phone line connection you'll get with sky, if you spend a fair bit of time online, download or have more than 2/3 devices online at any one time the virgin media option is worth the extra money for the broadband capabilities!
Hope you get it sorted either way mate
