If you have put too much in, it would spill out when hot. Maybe the old fluid was knackered and this is how the steering is supposed to feel? Try out a similar car for comparrison>

According to Mr Haynes if you have a standard system with the reservoir behind the wheel arch liner, there are MAX and MIN markings on the side of the reservoir. If you have the compact version with everything mounted down behind the engine, then there is a 'dipstick' on the underside of the cap with stepped diameters (the closest to the cap being the MAX marking).

Question is, did you bleed the system once you refilled it, by turning lock-to-lock 4 or 5 times then topping up and repeating until settled ?

Given I recently moved from Shawbury I know how nippy it gets round your way.... I noticed no real difference in 'weight' of the the steering during the silly cold we had and in ice the ABS kicked in almost as soon as I touched the brake pedal when on icey stretches, so if yours hasn't kicked in I am thinking you might need to bleed and top up yours.

'Highest point in Shropshire'... how'd you get your car up the Wrekin ?
