Default My brother is coming over to Vec C ownership, advice...

    Hi all,

My brother currently owns a mint, standard Mk4 1.6 Golf SE (has all the toys)
He was fortunate enough to have this as his first car, he's currently 26 and has his first child due next year.

He asked my advice on a larger car and naturally I suggested a Vec C

I left him to his own devices on his search as I've been searching for a van for my new business)
Anyway, he went out yesterday to look at some of the ones he's found online including a 2.0T ) but even with him looking (not really a car savvy person) he didn't view any that ticked all the boxes and felt "right" apart from one, it's a 2006 Design Nav model in blue, 1.8 engine (would this be VVT?)

He rang me up last night as said he really liked the car, said it was really clean inside and out, FSH, M.O.T, Low miles, etc. etc.

So I went up to have a look with him today, and wow, what a car!, paintwork looked stunning in the sunlight, interior looked like it had barely been sat in, clearly well cared for!
It has sat nav (including disc), rear headrest (didn't think facelifts had these?) sunglasses holder, rear interior light etc.

Had a good poke around it, has the usual Vectra trademarks on it, knackered rear ashtray, misted up passenger front fog light.
Oustiside, the rear brakes (discs and pads) definitely need doing, fronts have a little life left, couple of tiny dings on the bodywork and some loading marks on the top of the car bumper, alloys could do with a refurb and the headlights have a little mist in them.
Bodywork is straight, no signs of previous repairs, no leaks, rattles etc. idles nicely.
On closer inspection it's even been waxoiled and also has brand new winter tyres fitted (signs of a caring owner imo)

I'm out of touch with prices tbh but after a quick browse it seems a fair price for the age and condition of the car, though my brother has haggled him down already, he's going to test drive it again tommorow and give it another once over, bloke at the garage lacks alot of social skills imo, his attitude left alot to be desired from me.
At first he wouldn't let my brother drive the car unless he put a deposit down?

The car currently has MOT until March '13, he said he's M.O.T it but only if he paid screen price??

He also said the standard warranty is only 28 days and that once again he's only give that if the screen price was paid until I corrected him that as a trader under the consumer rights act he had to give 3 months warranty regardless of the price paid (I hope that was right lol, he was stumped regardless)

So that's where we are, I forgot to check the shocks and springs but I'm working just along the road from where the car is tommorow so I told my brother to let me know when he's going to view it and I'll pop along with him.

Anything else to check? also what are peoples thoughts on the above?

Oh, and before I forget, here's the link...

It should be, but the change over from the 1.8 16v(z18xe) to the 1.8 vvt(z18xer) was around the 55-06 mark. A quick look on Eurocarparts, using the Reg number, shows a different Timing belt kit to mine(1.8 16v) so id say it is the VVt your brother has bought.

All vecs came with rear head rests, its the center head rest your maybe thinking about being model specific and the Design is a reasonably high spec'd model anyway so should have one.

Hello Kev, i just live up the road from them and i thought that that was Henson's car place-maybe an offshoot of this company. As for the dealer wanting full price before he puts 12 months MOT on and only giving 28 days warranty??-think i would be looking elsewhere to be honest.if the car needs new pads and discs and other bits will if pass an MOT?.The dealer really do'es not need to give any warranty but i would of thought that 3 months was the norm, tell your bro to have a look around before he buys.i have the veccy SRi vvt 1.8 and love the car-but when i bought it[from a dealer]in Darlington] i went over it like fleas on a pig and anything that needed done was done before i paid for it.as i say its his cash but that salesman is just wanting rid at the price he wants/not at the price your bro wants to pay----Dave

I went to look at an alpha at the very same place not to long ago (I grew up in that area) Anything decent they get in seems to go rather quickly, dunno where he gets his stock from. The alpha I was after went like a hot cake. They do seem to have really good prices. I'm not to sure about the car though only you can tell by the way it drives and looks.
It looks ok in the pics though.

I paid £4000 last December for an 06 1.8VVTi Design with 42K miles on it. Looks like it is up for a fair price, rear discs arent too expensive, although it will probnaably have its original springs which are known to snap.

Listen to the engine on cold start, a small rattle that soon disappears is normal, anything longer then that and the cam phaser solenoids need doing.

Tbh the guy who was there just looked like the valeter lol

but as i said the car looked spot on, yeah rear centre armrest is what I meant, he wanted a deposit not the full amount but told my bro not to pay a penny until he was happy. There was no rattles from the engine at all.

My bro will be fine, he's pretty great with financials, he has his head screwed on so pretty confident he wont get ripped off, will see what happens tommorow when he goes back.
