Look then at the 215/50 x 17 it has a section width of 226mm! so has more rubber on the road

Looks like your calculation is flawed as the surface area on the road is the same

The main issue with the 215/50R17 is trying to find the edge on which the width measurement needs to be taken from
This could easily add up to 20mm on some tyres

No calc's at all on this simply re-stating the information contained in the data sheet. I would also imagine that the rim width will play a part in the equation also though.
