Default vec c 1.8 thermostat problems, symptoms?

just want to clarify before ordering a new one

    car drives a1
temp guage slow to get off the bottom,

at idle, it will get up to temp, around 92, fans kick in, and drops below 90

if driving in stop start traffic it does the same, but slower

if up to motorway speed or running at normal speed, temp needle drops down to nothing again within a couple of mins, and will stay there until in stop start traffic again or idling

my money is on thermostat, but just want to make sure. its a 2003 1.8

i had this problem on my last 1.8, but only replaced the spring part inside the housing, this fixed the problem for around a year, then the problem came back again, so going to change the whole thing this time

It will be the spring part inside again, just buy a better quality one and it should last longer.

sorted, £44 from vauxhall for new thermostat with housing, sensor and seal, 20 mins to change, then bleed the system, job done, nice and toasty heating now, which stays hot even when cruising, needle starts to move about 2 mins after driving. all sorted

just got my car a week or two ago notice the temp whe down to 70 with the heaters on and just below 80 when driving had a quick look at the howto on here got the part number i needed for the thermostat itself ad bobs your ucle cars heating a treat. Can drive the car though cause i changed the thermostat and the pump but the tensioner I got isint any good. Ill have to get it all apart again this weekend and put the new tensioner in and will be good to go did take the car for a wee drive thought and the temp stayed steady with the heater on full bung when driving. Did cool down a bit on idle with heating on full but thats oly to be expected.

I also have the 1.8 2003 model having read this thread last night kept an eye on my thermostat gauge this morning. Temp outside was -2c drove 15 miles at speeds of 20/30mph before the needle decided to move even then it only move slightly. The next 10 miles of my journey the needle sat at 75 whilst moving and moved up to 80 when in traffic by the time I had completed the 24 miles journey it was sat at 75. I've only just had the car serviced including anti freeze flush.
