    Default Advice please

    I have a vectra c 04 (Pre face lift) 1.9cdti (120)

Came round corner this morning and under steered massively on a ice patch, when I'd got the car back on track this brakes wouldn't work? All there was was a grinding and sort of judder..... I used the hand brake and gears to stop, then the brakes were working again fine.........

A bit of re-assurance would be nice.

(I wasn't going to fast was doing about twenty)

    Thanks.

Sounds like the traction controls working. Don't worry it's just finding grip

I had a Clio that done that. Put it this way it's in the scrappys now. Flipped it down a hill ended up with a fractured shoulder and I wasn't even speeding

Try it again on a straight road, do about 20mph or less depending on road conditions, keep steering straight & do an emergency brake, plant your foot firmly on the brake pedal & hold it down. You should feel a pumping action. This is ABS. It's there to minimise skidding, prevent steering lock & allows you to still steer round objects if you are caught in a really bad skid.

Depending on the age of the Vectra, it might also have brake assist. The system detects that you want to stop in a hurry and it does what it says on the tin. Assists your braking by slamming them on as hard as possible but at the same time still using the ABS to prevent the wheels locking up.

Make sure your seat belt is on or you'll be heading through the windscreen.
