    Default 53 Plate Vectra Problems

Hey guys, I've had my Vectra a year or so now and have only ever had 1 problem which was the brake lines rusting so I had to have them all replaced. The other day I was driving along and heard this rather loud scraping coming from the back of the car. After getting out to check the wheel arches etc I couldn't find anything. So I took it to the local garage and found out my rear discs and pads need replacing, 1 of my shock absorbers had "exploded" (their words) and 1 of my suspension arms had gone. I also needed two new tyres. The quote for this was £800 all in which this close to Christmas I don't have. I've done some minor repairs on cars myself before, replacing pads, wind screen washer motors starter motor etc and i'm looking certainly to do the discs and pads myself. From reading around it looks like i'm going to need a wind in tool for the piston but is there anything else I need a heads up for? Also would the shocks or arms be do'able as a DIY project or do they need compressing in any way? (For some reason my return key, new line isn't working on this forum? So apologies for the big block of text.) P.S do I have to replace the Shocks and Arms in Pairs?

I've replaced them singly before, rather than in pairs and found no ill effects from doing so. You need a set of spring compressors, which are cheap enough to acquire and the rest is easy enough to fit DIY.

You won't need to "wind in" the damper as when you undo the arm, etc you can easily remove the damper and fit the replacement...

    This might help somewhat:

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. The piston i'm talking about is for the brake pads on the back? Also from what I can see on that thread I shouldn't need a spring compressor for the shock absorber is that right? I'm just wondering if I can do the shocks, brakes and pads before xmas and the worry about the suspension arm after?

If it is a rear shock, then no spring compressors are needed. You would need them if it's a front shock though.
