Was it just ticking over or did you drive it?

Ticking over puts no load on the engine hence it takes longer to heat up.

The expansion tank is sighted at the highest point of the cooling system, air naturally rises to the highest point, thus making it self bleeding. If you do a coolant change some say that you can help this along by running the engine with the header tank cap removed. I assume that the lack of pressure allows any air in the system to rise quicker as its no longer under pressure, kind of like when you remove the cap from a bottle of fizzy juice.
The wifes Punto has the expansion tank on the side of the radiator, meaning it wont bleed back to the expansion tank. The Punto has a bleed point on one of the heater matrix pipes(highest point), meaning you have to bleed this system manually.
