Default Intermittent starting on my 2004 1.9 CDTI 150

Sometimes, and this is very frequently now over the last few weeks, when I turn the ignition key to position 2 the gloplug heating light does not appear and unsurprisingly the car does not start if the key is turned to position 3 to actually fire. Also the fuel pump priming buzz? does not happen at position 2 when the heating light does not appear. There is no clunk on turning to position 3 so I don't think it is the starter/solenoid. The battery is also a newish silver bosch so don't think that's a problem area.

When it does start it does so very happily and runs OK too. Frustratingly my wife's key seems to start the car more easily than mine but not always (she uses the car a lot less therefore key less worn?). Also have tried hi spec 3 in 1 put on the key to lubricate the ignition lock/switch which does seem to help. Anyway the car has always started eventually but sometimes after half a dozen goes and a few pauses and a few words of encouragement!

    Help and guidance much appreciated,

    Burgher.

Maybe something to do with the immobiliser or a worn key?

When you say it doesn't start - do you mean the engine turns over but fails to fire or it does nothing and just clicks. I have a 120 diesel and the glowplug light only comes on very rarely but starts first time!

To clarify a bit - the engine does not turn over, it just does nothing no real noise/sounds. Yes the engine does start without the gloplug light coming on if it is warm/has been running but if from cold then if the gloplug light does not appear however briefly then it does not start and does nothing.

Sounds like an immobiliser/key issue, as already said.

Thanks for all your inputs on this.

I'm pretty convinced this is an immobiliser/key issue. When turning the key to position 3 does not start the car - there's no sound of the fuel pump priming or anything else, and there's no current getting through to the starter motor, (battery has been tested and is in excellent shape) - looks exactly like the immobiliser is coming into play.
BUT the car eventually always starts, sometimes after several turns of the key/waiting awhile between turns (same behaviour with both keys really initially thought one key was better than the other). However once this week it just would not start, after half an hour phoned the AA - he turned up and started the car on the key after two goes - total frustration!!!!

Any further inputs on the way forward please?

Appreciate it's a bit of a long shot but have you tried opening the key up and putting a small piece of card on top of the battery to ensure that the battery is making a good contact - I had a problem with mine recently with the doors occasionally failing to unlock with the remote - another member advised this and it cured the problem - for what it takes it's worth a try
