mpg question?

My father in law has just bought an insignia but hes moaning its not as economical as it should be.its a 61 plate 2.0 cdti 160 ecoflex.
His is only doing 42mpg and says it should be at least 55mpg.
Didnt help when i told him my vec never goes below 45mpg!

the book figures for consumption are well in excess of the real world numbers on this car.

Think the dealers told him the book figures were 66 mpg!lol

Having owned the same engine spec for a couple of weeks now, my figures are working out about 45mpg tottling around town and short journeys, but put it on the motorway at 70-75 it will bring back 63mpg +

My dad has the same engine in his 159 and gets no where near the figures quoted

I did tell him he wouldnt get anywhere near the claimed mpg in the real world but would have thought it would do.more than 42mpg.not sure what types of journeys he has been doing and if hes forgotten hes got 6th gear as hes only ever had 5 speed cars!

tell him to stick in 6th and wack cruise on, my 2.2 direct petrol will do 47mpg on the motoway when in 6th.

I tried driving as economical as possible a year or so ago.... The concentration and lack of enjoyment of the journey soon put paid to that!!
