    Unhappy Vibration

Looking for a bit of help on a vibration that is driving me nuts.

When I get to 65mph I start to pick up a noticeable vibration through the steering wheel. It is still evident up to 80mph (when I tested it on a private road) and I can feel a slight vibration at speeds above 80 (again on the private road).

Background: Just before Christmas I had to get two new tyres fitted on the front (Hankook’s - not quite budget but certainly lower grade than I would normally put on her). The originals needed to be replaced quickly - one just legal and a puncture in the other.

I have had them balanced 4 times and I am now happy that the balancing is OK, which means the problem must be something else (Any balancing problem I have had in the past has been a narrow window 60 – 70 ish).

    1st – When tyres fitted
2nd – Took back 1hr later when I notice they had balanced the wheel with original inside sticky weights on
3rd – Went to 1st Kwik Fit, 35g out on one wheel 15g out on the other
4th – Went to 2nd Kwik Fit (most recent) – 15g needed on both wheels
The above checks were done straight off the car – no bumps or bangs between checks (all weights still attached), just poor calibration of the machines.

Wheels and tyres checked, no obvious wobbles or flaws.

No noticeable noise from either side when loaded (hard turning) and the CV gators are in good nick.

Any other suggestion to check before I go back and tell the fitter that the tyres are cr@p.

I would say **** tyres, defo a balance problem, a lot of weights needed, is it throwing them off, I would go somewhere different than kwik fit, a more specialist place ??

No Bainie all weights still attached, I checked to make sure for the 2nd - 4th attempts as I wanted to try and eliminate balancing as the problem.

About a week's gap between each attempt at balancing

I don't think I have ever heard a good word about Kwik fit except by Kwik fit... I use a small local place, they give great service and excellent prices. Online the Toyo 888 would have cost me £178 just to buy. They fitted them for £180 each including VAT and swaped the wheels front to back for free so I could keep the Eagle F1s for the back.

Anyone in Watford area, AFG Tyres and Servicing (01923 247947) are top notch and you know how fussy I am...

If it rattles at only high speed it would definatly suggest a rotating mass with a poor dynamic balance. Wheels are an obvious choice if the problem started after they were worked on but it could be something else.

    Brake disks,
    Fly wheel,
something effected by aerodynamic forces such as a spoiler...

    1) take the wheels somewhere else to get rechecked (not at Kwik fools),
    2) check the brake disks for warping and security,
    3) get your traking and alignment checked,
    4) if all else fails, better safe than sorry so take it the garge and get it checked over

    Thanks Nutron,

Thinking about all the wading the car has done recently I'm going to check the discks tommorrow then do a back front swap.

Just looked at your tyres in your post - they must be fun in the wet

Forget Kwik Fit, and go to somewhere with one of the latest generation of expensive balancing machines. Ask around, it will probably turn out to be an independant.

Also, I'm not sure what mileage you have done, but worn shockers can cause a minor imbalance to turn into a toothache.

Lastly, it's possible, but unlikely, that the tyres themselves are so out of balance that weights just can't sort it.
