Default Do i fight against the garage?

Hi all, let me appologise for the long essay, but hope you all give me your advice and suggestions

Let me start from the beggining......

Cambelt went on my 2005 pre facelift vectra c 1.9 cdti 120.

Took it to the nearest garage, which happens to be a FIAT garage. They repaired the car to costly sum of £1500.

Was ask to bring the car back after a week so they could change all the fluids and make sure there were no leaks of any sort.

Took the wife and kids on a weekend break to devon, drove up, around and back absoloutly fine, better than before and was really happy.

Came back from our break and took the car in as planned for them to check/change fluids. At this point i also asked them to replace the thermostat as (from reading on here) mine was knackered which they agreed to do at no charge

So...i get a phone call at 5:30 saying the car is ready to be picked up and the key has been left with the lady behing the till at the pumps. I collect the car and start driving home, i notice straight away that something wasnt right, there was no power, EML light was flashing on and off and loads of smoke so i pulled over and had a look and the intercooler hose (i think thats what its called, the big one on the right hand side) was hanging off as they had not put a jubilee clip on it!!!!! i tried ringing the garage but they were closed.

I cable tied it in place and this managed to get me home.

Gave the garage a ring in the morning and they sent someone over to look at it, he litteraly just put a new jubilee clip on and didnt start her or anything and went.

I get home from work all excited and take the car out and still the problems were there so i rang up the garage again and they asked for me to take the car in again, of which i did.

5:30 again they call and say the car is ready and all sorted, i ask on the phone what it was and the guy said "i dont know, i didnt do the work on it" which i thiought was strange.

So i pick her up and all is working fine, heater is lovely and she drives well.

Then....this friday gone,a few days later, after picking my little girl up from nursery i notice a noise coming from the engine, very faint and as i drove back got worse and worse to the point i could hardly drive it at all. i managed to get home and park her up.

By this time its too late to call the garage as they are closed so leave it over the weekend and call them monday morning, they say they will send someone out to take a look.......

    Monday- No show

Call again tuesday- turns up a 4:30pm had a browse around and mentioned the bottom end had gone and there being little oil in the engine and says he will need to see the car in the garage to confirm it and he will call me wednesday morning....

He didnt......rang them up today to be told that they want a second opinion from another mechanic who cant come round until friday, who lives locally and then to take it from there.....which all sounds quite strange to me

Is this guy just avoiding the fact that this could be there fault?

    is this their fault?

What have they actually done to my car?

She was running lovely until they changed the thermostat and fluids and not right since.

I am really at my wits end as i need the car for work and family as i have a 3 year old and a 5 week old baby.

I get the feeling they are going to try and palm this off as not their fault and get me to pay out to get it fixed.

As a member of the AA do they still do a service where they can send out their mechanic to give a second opinion?

Again appolagies for the essay and thanks to those who have read it all the way through.

I look forward to reading your replies

    Alex

contact citizens advice, as they are specialised in these scenarios, i would of thought that you should be entiltled to some sort of compensation for loss of earnings if it has stopped you going to work ??? not sure as im not a specialist but i always complain if something not done right, my missus always complains at me that i moan too much, but if i pay for a service, i want it done properly. and obviously a mechanic should know what hes doing. so yeah, citizens advice

If they've replaced the fluids (which i'm assuming means Oil as well as coolant), then how did it starve itself of oil? I'd be asking the garage for a jobsheet to see what's been done cos by the sounds of it, they have drained it and forgotton to put any back in!

Call the aa aswell as I think they still do the service. And if they did do an oil change on the engine I'd really want to know where its all gone. Without seeing the car I couldn't comment to much. Defo get a second opinion is my opinion. Aa inspection would be perfect as they do it in writing so that give u strong evidence. Good luck. Keep us posted

As all said above, Contact CAB ask for their advise, the AA will come out, but pretty sure you will have to pay for it and if they do find a fault try and get the garage to pay for that visir. First off like you have on here make a note of all phone calls, who you've spoken to and what time, who has visited your car and how long they spent on it, this will build up your case should they try to pass the blame which does sound like they will.

Good luck mate, is there any good garage out there.

Is the sump plug in properly? Any signs of an oil leak?

Looks like what MrDerv said ..... Drained oil and not refilled...

i looked into getting aa inspection before i bought the vectra, it cost about £200 and i cant see you getting that back. the citizens advice bureau is your best bet !!! http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/englan...or_service.htm

a few things to read there and to use as your ammunition when you contact them again
