    Default car and spanner light

ok, i hoovered out the car car using the connector in the rear compartment and since then the spanner and car light has come up on the dashboard (could be a coincidence). as soon as i start the car it dissappears and the car runs brilliant.

ive read using the search engine, "apparently" this is because a fault has been stored and it will go out on its own after a few restarts.

but whats the point of that? other than to panic you the car might have a problem.

do i need to be concerned at all?

Yes, eventually the warning should switch off (either 10 or so start ups, or 48 hours)
This is to allow easier diagnosis (known as stored codes) if the issue repeats
If it only happens once or is erratic, don't bother about it

The main concern is if the engine is placed into safe mode
Again if it only happens once and is fine thereafter, don't bother about it

I usually wait until it happens at least 50% of start ups or has become permanent

so if it dont go out on its own, even tho it goes on start up. should i get it checked? i assume if there was a "real" problem the light would stay on all the time?

Is this the spanner in the Rev Counter (EMS warning light) or the spanner to the right beside the Fuel Tank warning light?

If it is the spanner in the Rev Counter
If you turn the ignition on, but do NOT start the engine, what happens?
If you wait two minutes and then start the engine, what happens?

I would not be concerned if the light stays on all the time
This simply advises there is a fault and can be dealt with in due course

I would be more concerned if the light stays on and the engine is placed into safe mode
This has to be dealt with ASAP

    As an example :
    1
a failing camshaft sensor can cause the EMS warning light to show briefly at start up
This is not an essential sensor
However when this sensor fails it will stay on all the time and put the engine into safe mode
This is due to this type being known as a redundant sensor and relies on another sensor

    2
A failing crankshaft sensor will put the engine straight into safe mode
However on restarting the engine may start normally
When this sensor fails it will always start in safe mode
This is due to this type being known as a primary sensor and can be used by a failed redundant sensor

    cheers for the reply.

its the car and spanner light in the rev counter. if i switch the ignition on it stays on till i start the car regardless of the amount of time.. as soon as i start the car.. it goes out and i dont see it again. until the next time the ignition is switched on.

Are you sure it is regardless of the time?
Sounds more like the time is coincidence
The handbook however does advise if the warning light appears briefly to ignore it

As an aside, I assume it is a manual transmission

this what i got from the manual:

    Control indicator
    A for engine

    elect ronics

    (within tachometer display dial)

If it lights when the engine is running, there

is a fault in engine or transmission

    electronics. The electronic system switches

to an emergency running programme. Fuel

consumption may be increased and the

driveability of the vehicle may be impaired.

In some cases the fault can be eliminated

by switching the engine off and back on

again. If the control indicator lights up

again when the engine is running, consult a

workshop to have the cause of the fault

    remedied. We recommend a Vauxhall

    Authorised Repairer.

If it lights b riefly, but does not recur, it is of

    no significance.

Flashing with the ignition switched on

indicates a fault in the immobiliser system.

The engine cannot be started – see

    page 55
