    Default Suspension Knocking

    Help!

Last September my 52 plate Ls Vec went into Vx dealer for its annual service and mot. When dropping it of i asked them to have a look at a knocking from the front o/s wheel. They reported that the o/s steering linkage had some play init and needed fixing with a fixing kit . This cost me £130. All has been fine until just before xmas, when the knocking started again and then went.
Sorry if this boring you but there is a point to this.

The knocking came back last Friday. Inspected the o/s wheel and noticed the suspension spring had turned off/out of the suspension spring seating cup (bottom). Saturday morning saw me at Masterfit. Masterfit jacked up the vec had a look and said the knocking was due to the springs being weak. I asked was this another common suspension fault and he replyed no sometimes they just go weak. Anyway no springs in stock so vec's going back in on Saturday (maybe) for a pair of front springs (£200 +vat). Driving the car since Saturday there's been no knocking of any sort. What do i do, has anyone had the same problem. Advice please.

Also all suspension mods and rad mods have been done.

    Cheers Pugster

well if the seat mods have been done then i wonder if the old faithfull of a bit of grease in the seats would help... if the suspension goes off with a "bang" after travelling round a corner or over a manhole then it's just the spring seat mod binding in the seat pan.. if it knocks over every bump in the road then i'd say it's the anti-roll bar linkage's which are a very common fail point and are only 15 quid each..

weak front springs are heard of, but unless the ride height has decreased or unless the spring is broken then they shouldn't want changing..

    Hi,

Ride height and handling no different from when i first brought it in 2003. The bang/knock as i said is intermittant. And yes only happens when turning corners or over man holes. How would the grease in the seats help.

it will provide a minimal amount of extra lubrication to the seat mod, as it sits in the pan..

The 'Mod' is just some little nylon sleeves that are cut down their length to fit over the springs.. and your's isn't the 1st one to have the noise come back again.. either sloppy work when they where installed ( there is a correct way round for them) or the spring wasn't correctly located again.. the smear of grease provides a little extra lube to the nylon in my experience, to help it return to it's seating better and to help it resist creeping back round the spring pan. It may be that your struts need little more than removing from the car for a little TLC rather than pulling new springs on.

Kind of goes hand in hand doesn't it

As Marks said your's isn't the 1st one to have the noise come back again.
Had the mod done on mine at my gargae after Marks advice. Was fine for 3 to 4 months then started coming back. They had it back in, stripped it all down again, apparantly swapped components from one side to the other and it had fixed it again for about the same period of time. To be honest it hardly does it at all any more but it certainly still does fom time to time.
Intresting Mark you say about the grease or there is a wrong & right way round they go.

there is a correct way round to install the sleeves and rather worryingly i've recently had to fit some more to a members car who had previously had work done by a premier VX tuning place.... they had installed one correctly, and one the wrong way round.....and funnily enough the incorrect one was binding and banging....so it's worth checking them if they've started banging again..

the grease just gives it a little 'extra' help....to keep the nylon moving in the pan.

Found half the sleeve hanging off as you said GSI 3. Rang local Vx dealer for a part number and guess what, they can't find one number or part). There going to ring me back. still waiting.

When and if i get the part number and if i'm allowed to buy them from Vx I'll then take it to my local gargage whom always seam to bend over backwards to help and save you money.

Pugster hanging in there, but only just.

    Cheers GSI-3.

I'm going to hound my local dealers today. I can't believe they don't know the part number.

    What a great site.
